How do you change the fuel pump on a 98 Dodge Intrepid.?

I hate taking my car to the mechanic if I can do it myself. Does anyone know of any sites that have step by step instructions. Or is there anything that I should be conscious of before jumping into this. ThanksHow do you change the fuel pump on a 98 Dodge Intrepid.?not a bad job as long as the tank is low or empty. the pump is in the fuel tank. you need a $20.00 fuel line disconect set to take apart the fuel lines. also you will need to be able to get the car up about 2-3' in order to get the tank out.

1) disconnect battery

2) lift vehicle

3) loosen the filler neck and vent to tank

4) disconect wiring

5) 2 bolts hold the straps that hold the tank, loosen, but do not break them they alnmost never come out easy, lw or wd-40 helps alot

6) lower tank

7) where the fuel lines and wires are there is a round collar you remove

to get the pump and sending unit out

8) reverse the order and try starting, it can take a few seconds for the fuel pump to prime, but is done in 30 secs or less usuallyHow do you change the fuel pump on a 98 Dodge Intrepid.?when it comes to thing like gas.you have to be careful not to ignite it.for example a gas tank strap is so tight you may think of using heat from a torch to loosen it.that's a bad idea!!but i don't think that will be an issue.but you do need to drop the gas tank down and probably out of the car to change the fuel pump.as in its inside the gas tank .sometimes the fuel line requires special tools to remove the fuel lines from the sending unit so you can drop the tank.after that its not that bad to do.as long as you take your time and use common sense.just think safety and you will be fine.good luck.

  • How hard is it to change a fuel pump in a 2003 monte carlo I just recently did one in my blazer.?

Anything additional I should know before I attempt this. Drop the tank put it in put the tank back up. I am doing this for an older friend and the shop wants 700 to do that and she is on a fixed income. Anything I should be aware of before doing this any help would be greatly appreciatedHow hard is it to change a fuel pump in a 2003 monte carlo I just recently did one in my blazer.?it would be best to buy a repair manual for that car, it will take you step by step. you can get them at most parts stores like autozoneHow hard is it to change a fuel pump in a 2003 monte carlo I just recently did one in my blazer.?I just did this on a mercury villager. It was dream to work on, much unlike my Chevy pickup, which i did some months earlier. The Chevy pickup is much like your blazer. Notes

    1. Have most of the gas out.

    2. Detach the hoses near the tank (I took the door assy out of my pickup, wrong)

    3. Change the fuel filter too

    4. The straps that help one of my gm tanks in was rusted, I had to drill and make threads

    5. Have it high enough up

    6. When you knock the center piece off, make sure you blow it out clean, then use a bass punch to keep from making sparks

    7. Empty the tank entirely out. Last tank I found a lot of water in mine.

    8. Replace fuel lines if you find frayed ones.

    Hope this helps.

Is it hard to change the fuel pump in a 96 dodge grand caravan?

Also....anyone know how much that would run to DIY and to take it somewhere? I am trying to weigh my options. But if its in the fuel tank....and more than a couple hundred to fix, I am just selling it. Thanks all!!Is it hard to change the fuel pump in a 96 dodge grand caravan?Yes all fuel injected engines have fuel pumps INSIDE the gas tank.

As for DYI, you should be VERY CAREFUL when working around gasoline and gas tanks.

If you decide to work on them

    (1) work away from the house or buildings

    (2) have fire extinguisher close by

    (3) have second person near by - just in case YOU catch fire

As for the cost, that depends on where you live as labor is huge part of the cost.

    Good Luck...

How to change fuel pump on a 2001 s10?

You can either drop the tank or lift the bed. If you have a full tank of gas then I would lift the bed. It is only 6 main bolts, the filling neck screws and tail light plugs. Use a brass punch when disassembling the ring on the fuel pump, so that it doesn't cause sparks. And you are gonna need the fuel line disconnect tool, which is pretty cheap. How to change fuel pump on a 2001 s10?First, you'll need to drop the tank, as the pump is inside the tank.

Best to et either a Haynes or Chilton manual for step by step instructions. How to change fuel pump on a 2001 s10?The fuel pump is in the fuel tank. It's much easier to pull the bed of the truck off to fix it than to try to disconnect the tank. They are ungodly expensive too!. I would definitely have a chiltons book. That's my personal preference.

The dealer wants to charge $850 which is outrageous when the part costs 300 bucks. I'm pretty sure there is no easy way to do this. Who diagnosed it was the pump in the first place? Regardless, if you have never done this before and you do not have the proper tools to drop the gas tank I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. If you do decide to give it a go, then have someone there who has a good assortment of tools and has done something like that before. Worst case scenario, you get the tank out but cant get it back in or you get it back in and it still doesn't start. You then tow it to a dealer who will now charge you even more to redo what you just did.How difficult is it to change a fuel pump in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier? it it's still able to pump, the easiest way is to just feed your fuel line into a gas can and pump the gas out that way.

unless you can access the tank/pump from inside the car, you'll have to drop the fuel tank and replace it that way.

300$ actaully sounds low for the part. maybe the dealers hiding some inflation on the part in there. i'd call around, or do the work myself. 550 to change a fuel pump you can do better

additionally how do i remove the tank to get to the fuel pump to change it

    ????

thx in advanceHow do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro?haha... You will need to remove the whole tank. You need to remove your exhaust system and then lower your rear axle assembly to access the tank enough to pull it out. I reccommend using a hoist for the job. I don't think it is possible on the ground. A shop would charge approx 400$ for installation. If you are handy with a wrench its do able. And if its not going anywhere it will give you something to do. :)How do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro? The 1982-02 camaro/firebird has one of the hardest to remove fuel tanks I have ever seen.

To change the elec pump you have to remove or atleast drop tank down.

To do this you pretty much have to drop the rear axle housing. The tank is only held in place by 2 straps with a bolt in each strap plus the filler neck. To get it to come down though you have to have body jacked up and supported high on stands, then you can remove shocks, panhard rod, torque arm, wheels, etc front rear end and if car is high enough up, then you can just let the rear end down, then pull tank and you might have enough clearance to get to the pump.

Alot of people even cuts the floor above gas tank, and removes pump from the top/inside of carHow do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro?its not an easy task.you have to remove the rear axle and coponents then loosen the tank straps.unplug the conectors and fuel lines and remove the tank.once the tank is out you turn the lock ring and remove the pump. How do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro?mechanicHow do i change the fuel pump in a 99 camaro?Go back in time and stop yourself from buying the Camaro

How much should it cost to change a fuel pump on a '97 chevy blazer?

I have a 97 blazer that broke down on the side of the road I had it towed to a local garage as it was not something fixable along the highway. They told me the fuel pump needs replaced and gave me a quote of $600 is that reasonable, or are they ripping me off since my car is kind of stuck there.

add the fuel pump is in the fuel tankHow much should it cost to change a fuel pump on a '97 chevy blazer?if u call a local parts store in ur area, and ask them the %26quot;list%26quot; price of that pump, i think you'll find that the %26quot;list%26quot; price is someplace in the $320 area...now understand, %26quot;cash%26quot; price is different from %26quot;list%26quot; price, so while the pump %26quot;cash%26quot; price may only be $225, the %26quot;list%26quot; price, which is the price the shop will charge you for it will be $320 and then they will charge you labor.

i have heard these pumps are very expensive, and labor today can run as high as $90 an hour and even more...if u believe its high, and have other shops in the area, u may wanna get a second opinion on the price...shops are hungry in this economy, u may find a better rate someplace else.

  • How change a fuel pump on a renault megane 02?

i have basically been quoted 350 to change a fuel pump, could i do it myself and how?

i live in darlington if anyone can helpHow change a fuel pump on a renault megane 02?The fuel pump is fitted in to the top of the fuel tank, if you lift up the rear seat base on the drivers side of the car you should find a round black access panel. Remove that panel and you can see the top of the pump, squeeze the coloured squares on the fuel pipes to release them, disconnect the electrical connector and then unscrew the large black plastic nut that holds the pump in to the tank. The nut will be tight and dealers use a special tool to release it, although it is possible to remove it by using a hammer and a screw driver and tapping it round. The biggest problem with this job is that some times when the nut is taken off it won't go back on due to the tank neck distorting, this usually results in replacing the fuel tank !

Can i have a detailed explanation on how to change the gas tank and fuel pump on my 1989 chevy silverado?

the present tank has a leak and i am not an auto mechanic in any way, but i do not have the money to have it done at a shop. i already have the replacement gas tank. To replace a fuel pump, water pump, battery is one thing when someone doesn't know what they are doing. But to replace a gas tank by a person with no experience is asking for problems.

A mechanics shop in my town allowed a rookie to change a tank out at the shop. That shop blew up later that day and killed 2 people. When I worked at Lexus and they were removing a gas tank. EVERYONE in the service area had to leave while only 2 mechanics did the work.

How hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?

i want to change it myself but was just wondering?

How hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?its not real bad,the worst part of it is getting the tank off,try and get all the gas out of it that you can and get someone to help you, doing it by your self is kind of hard, you have to loosen and remove all the hoses and wires, and the loosen the tank and try and get it down level, putting the pump assembly in only takes about 25 minutes to do ,but getting it back up and in place and bolted back down takes some time, the less gas it has in it the easier the tank will be to handle, just be careful gas can and will explode if a spark gets to it,so take extreme caution when doing this, good luck. How hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?its not just pop out the backseat and it is right thereHow hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?It is not so hard and never fooled with neon but principals should be the same, pump is mounted in the tank so first find the test valve on the fuel rail and relieve the pressure, jack up the rear of car and block so you don't get killed, If there is a lot of fuel in tank try to siphon all you can get out and use a good floor jack with a platform to steady the tank as you drop it down after removing two support straps that hold it in place. you will have a wire connector to unplug and the fuel line to unhook so drop it slowly because you may not have much slack in either and unhook before dropping all the way. Once this is done there are several bolts to take out, to remove the fuel pump and reverse everything to install it . good luckHow hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?not hard, but playing with gas is no fun

pay someone to do it man

save yourself the trouble and headachHow hard is it to change a fuel pump assembly in a 1998 plymouth neon?It is not too bad, I did it in abt 1 1/2 hrs by myself. Start with the tank as empty as you can. Put the passenger side (F%26amp;R) up on jack stands, disconnect the feed %26amp; return lines and electrical connector from the tank, loosen the support straps but do not remove them fully yet, then support the tank on the passenger side with a jack. Remove the passenger side support %26amp; carefully lower the passenger end of the tank. You should be able to lower it enough to access the pump retainer ring %26amp; gently tap it loose. It will be a tight fit but you can maneuver the pump out now. Swap the pump %26amp; reverse everything, doublecheck all your fittings/connectors %26amp; go. FYI, if you are replacing the pump now %26amp; are considering engine upgrades soon, put in the 255 pump now and only do it once! Some have the heat sheild for exhaust in way, but a few 7mm bolts removed and it should come out and give you clearance. How do I change a fuel pump on a 1997 grand am gt?After the strap comes off, you will need a special tool to unhook the fuel lines. Don't pry them with a screwdriver, they will break, and they must be replaced with expensive factory parts for the car to work. I encourage people to work on their own cars, but this can be a trying operation if you don't have a fair amount of mechanical background. Also, be careful. If the tank has much fuel in it, it is often heavier than you might expect.

  • How do i change fuel injectors on my '95 plymouth neon?

I have a '95 Plymouth Neon SOHC 2.0 manual transmition. I've been advised to change the fuel injectors due to a starting problem. (car cranks but won't start (already changed fuel pump and filter)). I've got a hold some new injectors and i want to try them out before i send the car away to a junk yard. Any general instructions will definitely come in handy.

THX...How do i change fuel injectors on my '95 plymouth neon?you would have to have a heck of injector fault for that to be the problem. Do yourself a favor of spending the cash and goto local parts store and ask if they have a %26quot;noid%26quot; light for the injector on that car. Most places like autozone sell them for around 8 bucks.

Unplug an injector and plug that into the plug. have someone try to start the car and notice if the light flashes. If it doesnt %26quot;and I bet it doesnt%26quot; then its not the injectors.

Also, does it have spark? You might have a crank sensor or even a timing belt problem.

You can have an injector flooding a cylinder, but it shoudl at leats try to start. never have I seen all injectors dump at once. so do as I mentioned above.

But seriously, noid light it before replacing injectors. How do i change fuel injectors on my '95 plymouth neon?Very simple. I pulled mine off about 3 years ago when I installed a new intake manifold and from what I recall, there are only 2 or 3 screws holding the fuel injector rail in place. Once you have taken those out and removed the fuel line from the rail, unclipped the electrical plugs from the injectors, and release the fuel pressure from the rail ( very important, otherwise you could be soaked in fuel ), the whole assembly ( including the injectors ) comes off. You would then remove the injectors individually from the rail.

How to change fuel pump in a 94 mercury tracer?

Like most modern vehicles that have electronic fuel injection, you must remove the fuel tank. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank.

Before you start. You will be opening up the fuel tank and disconnecting fuel lines to do this work. Do this in a well ventilated area, best if done outside. If in a garage keep the door open. Remove any possible ignition sources. No smoking. Have a decent sized fire extinguisher on hand that is rated for flammable fuel.

The fuel tank is located beneath the rear seat. It comes out from underneath the car.

Yo must depressurize the fuel system. Remove the fuse for the fuel pump. Attempt to start the engine. If it starts allow it to run until it stalls. Disconnect the battery.

Some vehicles use a special quick release for the fuel line connections. You must use a special release tool to disconnect these fittings. Don't even try to open these without this special tool. You will only end up damaging these fittings causing more work and expense.

When you have the fuel tank removed look where the fuel lines enter the top of the tank. In this area you will find a 4 inch locking ring. Remove the locking ring with a BRASS hammer and BRASS punch. You must use brass because the last thing you want is a steel tool making a spark.

Once you remove the locking ring the entire fuel pump assembly, fuel pick up, and fuel level sender lifts out of the fuel tank. There may also be what looks like a sock around the assembly. This must be reused if there is one.

Reverse your steps to reinstall the fuel pump and fuel tank.

My instructions are very general and may not be 100% complete for your specific application. I recommend to consult a service manual for your specific car.

How much to change a fuel pump in a 04 jeep liberty?

How much will the run me at the mechanic? Thanks. How much to change a fuel pump in a 04 jeep liberty? It depends on who the mechanic is you take it to.

If you know a friend who is a mechanic and does work on the side it will be much cheaper. I have a friend who does such work, my sisters fuel pump went out on her dodge caravan. If i recall right the pump was like $150 and he charged like $75 or maybe $100 to put it on. And yes, i do believe when you buy a fuel pump it comes with a filter but that might depend where you buy it from and what type it is.

  • What's the best way to change a fuel pump on a 99 Yukon?

I have a 99 Yukon that the fuel pump is about to give up.. Im fixing to change it.. I have an idea how to but if there is any tips, hints, or secrets someone can give me please do.. ThanksWhat's the best way to change a fuel pump on a 99 Yukon? The only fuel pump is in the tank...

First, drain the tank. Easiest is to siphon into some gas cans and pour it in to your lawn mower and other vehicles. This wont get the tank empty, but the less it weighs the easier it is to handle.

Get you a floor jack ready, it will help. Loosen the front strap as much as you can, then remove the rear strap. Use the floor jack to help hold the rear of the tank to keep from binding and pulling on the hoses. You can reach up on the tank from the passenger side and access the plug and the pressurized and return fuel line. I cannot remember the size wrench that you need to remove the fuel lines. Watch yourself closely when you go to remove the fuel line fittings, They can be sticky, and you can twist the metal line from the sending unit (I tore up mine but luckily it was the return line so I was able to use a hose clamp over the pipe that I cut and cleaned up, if you mess up the pressurized side you will need a new sending unit because the fuel pressure is 60psi, no hose clamp gonna work on that).

Once you get all that mess loose, go ahead and finish removing the front strap and remove the fuel tank from under the vehicle. Take a wire brush and scrub the area around the sending unit to bust free any dirt and gunk build-up. Then blow away with some compressed air. Take a flathead screwdriver and remove the keeper ring that holds the sending unit in place (righty tighty lefty loosy). Put the flathead against one of the vertical tabs and smack the butt of the screwdriver with a hammer or something heavy.

When you remove the sending unit, disconnect the fuel pump, and replace with the new one. Your pump should also come with a new screen that connects to the bottom of the sending unit. When you look in your tank, you can see the baffels and some sand on the bottom is to be expected. Tilt the tank to the sides and you can remove some of the crap on the bottom.

After you get the new pump mounted to the sending unit, you are ready to replace. Getting it back together is just opposite of removal, place sending unit in tank (don't forget the rubber o-ring) and tighten the keeper ring. Muscle the tank back under the Yukon, and hang the front tank strap. Connect your fuel lines, and electrical connection. Then hand your rear tank strap, then tighten them. Pour a few gallons of fuel in the tank and you are ready to fire. What's the best way to change a fuel pump on a 99 Yukon? Some vehicles have two fuel pumps... One in the tank and the other is located along the frame. Naturally the one that has to go is the one that is located inside of the gas tank. As far as changing it well there really aren't any tips hints or secrets. You just have to dig in with both hands. The only thing that may help is if your gas tank is almost empty... This will aid in your removing of the tank when the time comes because you won't have all the extra weight to deal with as in a full or partly full tank. So drain the tank if at all possible. Otherwise it is pretty general as to removing the tank. Start by unbolting the tank straps and removing the hose that goes from the tank up to where the hose attaches to the body. Undo any wires that will need to be undone and undo the gas line at the tank or where ever the best spot will be to reach it. Then the tank should be ready for removing. Now the fuel pump is inside of the tank... To remove it there is usually some kind of ring that must be unscrewed to gain access to the pump. Once you have the ring off the pump should lift out as a assembly. When it comes to replacment everything goes back together just the oppsite. You'll probably have to get new hardware for the gas lines cause they aren't made to reuse anymore. Good luck and hope this helps you some.

If you have my luck, the tank will be FULL. Siphon out the fuel before you drop the tank or you will have real problems when it drops. Get as much fuel out as possible. Usually a bit of a pain but be patient and you will get them off. Also the fuel pump is usually held in by a cam lock ring. Easy to remove and replace. Mercedes is easy to work on, but mechanics would charge you arm %26amp; leg for repair. Car maybe cheap, but if you cannot replace simple thing like fuel pump on your own, you are asking for trouble with this car. If you have $500 on hand. I suggest taking it to a local shop, and let them look at it. They can find the problem, and if you wont fix it. It should not cost more then $500. Starting problems or most of the time minor fixes. When i say local shop i dont mean dealership. They or much much higher then a local small shop.

P.S: go to a local shop, and tell them your problem. Most of the time they will tell you what they think it is. Then you would know, and can ask how much to fix it. Make sure you ask the total of the price. That way you have labor etc all added up.

I have an cool old 57 Chevy with a straight 6 235. It needs a fuel pump and I thought this was an easy replacement. Take off the fuel lines and undo the 2 bolts that hold the pump to the block. After you clean up the gasket surface and get ready to put the new pump on, the rod will probably have fallen down. How do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica?

is it hard to change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica?if i was to buy one from a used parts dealer does it have to be from the same model car?how do you change it?How do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica?below is a link to a fuel pump on ebay that will fit your car.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/87-88-89-

the link below is from the autozone repair guide to show you what is involved. from this you can tell if you want to do it yourself or take it to a shop.

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090How do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica?it is not the easiest of jobs the pump is in the fuel tank and the tank will have to be removed all the fuel lines must be disconnected and quite ofter they are seized and wont come apart unless you are an avid do it yourselfer i would take it to a shop. How do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica?http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/intHow do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica?difficult.it is inside the fuel tank. How do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica? The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. You will need to disconnect the filler and vent lines, plus the fuel lines and the electric lines. Drain or siphon as much fuel as possible from the tank. Unfasten the tank retaining straps and leave the tank down. May have to twist and turn to clear the exhaust. There is a lock ring that holds the tank unit in place that must be removed. Then you can remove the unit and swap in the new pump. I would definitely get a new pump. It is a lot of work to do this twice when the used pump you bought doesn't work or doesn't last. How do you change a fuel pump on a 1990 corsica? You don't buy a used fuel pump. You can buy an aftermarket, but on a part that so much of your life depends on, this is an item I would fork over the extra few bucks and get from a dealer. Get the whole assembly. It runs about $384.00 and comes with the sender, and a new seal for the gas tank. To change the fuel pump, you raise the rear end of the car high enough that the tank can be dropped and slid out from under it. Loosen the two hose clamps from the hoses on the tank filler neck. You will see two metal straps that hold the tank in place. You have to take the bolt out of the end of each strap. This will let the tank fall so watch your head. You also may want to be careful not to spill fuel when you lower the tank. The tank has to be worked down slowly, so you don't rip the wires off the connector where they plug onto the fuel pump. When you can access the plug, unplug it from the pump on top of the tank. You will also have to disconnect the fuelk lines from the top of the unit as well. Work the tank down, while working the filler neck hoses off the filler neck, leaving those hoses attached to the tank. When you have the tank on the ground, you will see the round clip and the electrical connection where the pump comes out. Take a screw driver and a hammer, and gently tap the tabs on the retainer clip, counterclockwise. The clip will pop free after a few taps. If it is excessively rusty, it may take more than a gentle tap, but try not to break off the tabs. You should be able to lift the pump out of the tank, but you may have to gently pull it, so the strainer doesn't fall off into the tank. Installation is the reverse of removal. This is also a good time to change the fuel filter, and check your other maintenance needs. Good luck. This job isn't too bad really.

Sometimes, two screwdrivers are enough to get the job done. Be sure that you check the power supply to the pump before you get involved in this project. How do I change the fuel pump on my Mazda 626?

Before you do anything, of course, you have to kill the fuel system pressure. Start the car, pull the relay (it's in the fuse box under the hood), and wait for it to die.

You may have to lower the tank a little to get to the clamps. remove the fuel tank by placing a jack under the tank for support. I strongly recommend getting help when removing and installing the tank. once the tank is safely on the ground you will see a cover with the fuel lines running through it. clean off any dirt around it. Remove that cover the fuel pump is inside. Replace the fuel pump and sock then reverse the order to put the car back together.

I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am, V6 engine. It's having a hard time starting up and running (it takes a few turns of the key and a couple presses of the gas pedal and than when I put it in gear it kind of chugs when I give it gas and than dies) my husband changed the fuel filter and it was pretty clogged up. Before he removes the pump, he should connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel injector rail to see if the fuel pressure is low.

If the fuel filter was%26quot;really clogged up%26quot;, you probably have contamination in the gas tank. Either someone dumped dirt in it or it is rusting and particles clogged the filter. If it was clogged so much that he noticied it, the fuel injectors may also be clogged.

http://www.automedia.com/Fuel/Pump/Replacement/ccr20051101fp/1How do you change a fuel pump in a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am?Well hopefully you are low on gas. But you have to drop the fuel tank. There should be two straps that hold the tank up to the body of the car. You have drop them and then you should be able to see the fuel lines going into the tank. Take the lines off the sending being carefully that you don't brake anything, these metal lines are probably very rusty and brittle. You should see a large lock ring around the base of the fuel sending unit. You have to some how turn that lock ring, most people use a chisel and a hammer. After you get that off you should be able to pull the sending unit out of the tank. There are two types of fuel pumps that might be available for your car. One is a complete unit that includes a fuel pump that is already installed into the sending unit. Or what they call a cut away, which means you can buy the pump and strainer and install it into the old sending unit.

    Hope this helps.

  • How to change fuel pump and filter?

Have a 1973 el camino, the car stalls and doesnt sound like its gettting gasHow to change fuel pump and filter? The filter is in the main line to the carb. I would start there. The pump is on the engine, its mechanical and is operated off the engine vs the newer style electric in the tank versions. How to change fuel pump and filter?Start with your filter first, I've seen them mostly on the underbody, close to where the driver seat is but yours may be elsewhere. You can always pull off a fuel line from the output of the pump to see if it spits gas when it's being cranked. Have something to catch it, of course! Good luck! How to change fuel pump and filter? You have a mechanical fuel pump that is mounted

on the engine. The fuel filter may be located in the

line between the pump, and the carburetor. It is

usually an in line filter, but depending upon the type

of carburetor you have, it could be in the carburetor

    where your fuel line connects.

Since the removal of the pump is a bit involved for

most to tackle for the first time, I would suggest

    that you do the following:

Purchase one of the low cost, electric, in-line

pumps. They come with a ring type mount so it

is easy to mount on the firewall, or fender splash

guard. The fuel pump pressure for these is in the

range of your mechanical pump, and works just

    fine.

Hook the wire for power to a circuit that only

works when the ignition is turned on.

Disconnect the fuel line to the inlet of the mechanical

pump, and install it in the inlet of the electric pump.

Next disconnect the fuel line going to the carburetor

from the mechanical pump, and connect it to the

    outlet on the electric pump.

Many times you will need some extra fittings, and

some rubber fuel line hose to make these connections.

To be on the safe side, plug the holes on the

mechanical pump just in case you find it is good, and

you want to go back to it. Leave it on the engine as it

is sealing the opening into the block.

The small electric pump looks about like some filters,

and costs less than one of the mechanical pumps. I

purchased one last year for just over $20.

When you turn the key to On, you should hear the

electric pump starting, and working to pull fuel into

it. It is a bit more noisy when it is dry, but quiets

when gas is pulled into it. When it quiets down you

will have the gas up to the carburetor so it is then

    ready to start.

I have been running one of these small pumps in

a truck for the past thirteen years now.

How do you change a fuel pump in a 2002 dodge caravan?

I think that the fuel pump is bad and I need to change it. I can not find any info on how the best way(and safest) is to change the pump. Any help would be appreciated! How do you change a fuel pump in a 2002 dodge caravan?well you dident say if it was a carb or fuel injection.

If it fuel injection then you will have to drop the gas tank as the pump is insider the tank.

This is not hard unless you have a lot of gas in it.

But my advice is DO NOT DO IT IF YOU NEVER HAVE . It is a little trickey trying to get it down with a lot of gas.How do you change a fuel pump in a 2002 dodge caravan?A lift and transmission jacks to hold the tank in place. How do you change a fuel pump in a 2002 dodge caravan? As far as safety is concerned, take it to a dealer or shop. You have to remove the fuel tank to get to the fuel pump. It would be easier to have the car on a lift. It would be easier, also to have a tank jack. The fumes from the gas would make it very dangerous. I recommend you have a professional do it and they would be liable for any problems, ideally. How do you change a fuel pump in a 2002 dodge caravan? If you are planning on doing it yourself, the fuel tank must be removed as the fuel pump is inside the tank. Use a brass punch and hammer to remove the lock ring holding the pump in.

I prefer changing them when the tank is near empty. Not always possible, so I have a catch can (barrel at times) underneath to catch gas as it flows out once the ring is removed.

A new oring should be installed with the new pump and make sure the lock ring is fully seated.

Whatever you do, don't smoke around it (if you or anyone else there does). Fuel lines going to the pump can be removed by squeezing the plastic lock on them.

It is an realtively easy job at the shop, but a lot harder if you are trying to do it at home.

    Seriously, consider having it done.

How to change fuel pump for a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire.?

I just asked a question on how to locate the fuel pump. I heard people mention that it is a hard task to complete. Could someone please explain the process of changing the fuel pump. The shop I took it to wanted to charge me over $700 for the part and labor. Which I thought was rather high. Thanks for your time. How to change fuel pump for a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire.?The fuel tank has to come off. You have to disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector. Then loosen the 2 straps that hold the tank in place. This is not easy to do, especially if there is fuel in the tank. Be very careful if you really plan to do this yourself. I've replaced many fuel pumps on Sunfires and I wouldn't want to do this job at home. Once the tank is out, you have to remove the fuel pump module from the tank. The fuel pump module seal has to be installed correctly or it will leak. And also the check engine light will come on if you don't install the seal correctly. How to change fuel pump for a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire.?You have to remove the fuel tank from the car . Sometime that includes dropping the exhaust. Once on the floor you remove the fuel pump module and replace the whole thing .Reinstall the module and then the tank into the car.
