How to change fuel pump in a 94 mercury tracer?

Like most modern vehicles that have electronic fuel injection, you must remove the fuel tank. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank.

Before you start. You will be opening up the fuel tank and disconnecting fuel lines to do this work. Do this in a well ventilated area, best if done outside. If in a garage keep the door open. Remove any possible ignition sources. No smoking. Have a decent sized fire extinguisher on hand that is rated for flammable fuel.

The fuel tank is located beneath the rear seat. It comes out from underneath the car.

Yo must depressurize the fuel system. Remove the fuse for the fuel pump. Attempt to start the engine. If it starts allow it to run until it stalls. Disconnect the battery.

Some vehicles use a special quick release for the fuel line connections. You must use a special release tool to disconnect these fittings. Don't even try to open these without this special tool. You will only end up damaging these fittings causing more work and expense.

When you have the fuel tank removed look where the fuel lines enter the top of the tank. In this area you will find a 4 inch locking ring. Remove the locking ring with a BRASS hammer and BRASS punch. You must use brass because the last thing you want is a steel tool making a spark.

Once you remove the locking ring the entire fuel pump assembly, fuel pick up, and fuel level sender lifts out of the fuel tank. There may also be what looks like a sock around the assembly. This must be reused if there is one.

Reverse your steps to reinstall the fuel pump and fuel tank.

My instructions are very general and may not be 100% complete for your specific application. I recommend to consult a service manual for your specific car.
