Car Problem! Need Help ASAP!?

I had only drove about 9 blocks when my tryck died. Its a 1987 Chevy Suburban. I was only going 20-25 mph then all the sudden the radio and everything started to die and then the engine shut off. Then the truck was rolling so I tried to use the brakes, but they were locked up for some reason so I switched to park. Then I started it back up just fine, but I still don't want it to die again.

I heard it could be either the fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs or the alternator.

I had changed the fuel pump and put new oil in about a month ago and only drive this three days a week.

And if it helps, only the radio was on, and I was hauling 500+ lbs. of laminate flooring in the back space.

So what the problem and how do I fix it???Car Problem! Need Help ASAP!?ignition module (under distributor cap)

distributor cap and rotor bug

spark plugs and wires

throttle body may need cleaning

check alternator along w\ the battery

also when the engine dies your braking system looses vaccum that's why the brakes locked upCar Problem! Need Help ASAP!?%26quot;...then all the sudden the radio and everything started to die and then the engine shut off. %26quot;

What do you mean by %26quot;everything%26quot;? Everything ELECTRICAL? You need to be more specific. But since you said the RADIO started to die (first), and THEN it cut off, that is a huge clue. Forget the fuel pump, filter, spark plugs, etc. Sounds like you lost electrical power, so it quit running.

So, here's my theory - Chevrolet has had a reputation for having bad ignition switches. Does your truck have tilt column in it? Those can cause electrical problems in the harness to the ignition switch, by rasing/lowering the column. Since it started right back up, that kind of points to electrical, not fuel-related.

The brakes %26quot;locked up%26quot; because you lost power brakes, you would have to push REALLY hard to engage them once you lose vacuum ( I think that is a dangerous design flaw, but anyway...), so there's probably nothing wrong with them. Hauling 500 lbs is nothing, either.

I'd try moving the column if it's a Tilt, while idling ( in PARK, not while you're driving! Hel-LO , :D ), to see if it'll cut off again. If it does, then you may have found your problem. Do an internet search on Chevy Suburban and Ignition switches, and see if you find any reports of problems. You may find them. I know the Blazers and small pick-ups suffered as well from this once they got some age on them. Good luck,

- The Gremlin Guy -Car Problem! Need Help ASAP!?My mother bought a Chevy Baretta in the 1980's (don't remember the exact year-82-85?) and it would stop running on the freeway! It happened to myself and a younger sister on the freeway and thank God it was early in the a.m. and we were returning from a concert so there was little traffic. This problem continued, and it behaved in the exact manner as yours, except that many times it would not start as well as the times it did. We took it to so many mechanics yet none could ever fix the problem. To this day, we still do not know what the problem was. However, my mother got a Lemon Law attorney-it was a new law back then-and forced Chevy to buy back that Baretta since it was off the showroom floor when we bought it and had fewer than 10 miles on it. She won and got back all of the money she spent on it, including down payment and monthly payments. You do not say if you bought the truck new or used.

So, while this is not a technical mechanical answer, I am just telling you that was our experience with a Chevy behaving like that. It may be a computer problem, it may be a battery problem. That's all I can tell you.Car Problem! Need Help ASAP!?GM had a problem on many models where the wiring passed through the firewall, especially when wet. The connections on the outside as well as the connections under the dash were not making good contact, and woud break contact at various times. Next time, try to isolate problem by moving wires outside first, then under dash. after each movement, try to start vehicle.Car Problem! Need Help ASAP!?I agree with tracie and gremlin. sounds like an ignition problem.Car Problem! Need Help ASAP!?My guess is the ignition switch

try wiggling the key all over the place while it is running (in park) see if you can make it cut out

My car will not start. It's got spark, turns over, fuel pump sounds to work. maybe it's the fuel filter?

I have a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu V6 with 82000 miles, bought it 6 months ago at 79000 miles. In the past month(I live in Alaska) when temperatures dipped to the low 30's at night time, it seemed to need to crank over more times until it actually started than usual.

Now when I try starting it, you can hear it turn it over, it has gas, it has spark, all the belts work, when you put the key in, you can hear something turning on(I think is the fuel pump) but it does not start. I think it may be the fuel filter. Any other good ideas of what it may be? Any idea where exactly the fuel filter is on this car and how easy it is to change it? I assume the fuel filter is by the engine somewhere.

My car will not start. It's got spark, turns over, fuel pump sounds to work. maybe it's the fuel filter?if it started having trouble starting when the temp dipped you might need a tuneup. And with winter coming and where you live i would do a complete tuneup plugs wires filters both air and gas.My car will not start. It's got spark, turns over, fuel pump sounds to work. maybe it's the fuel filter? It possibly is the fuel filter. Location, on most american cars, is underneath the car, near the fuel tank.My car will not start. It's got spark, turns over, fuel pump sounds to work. maybe it's the fuel filter?Try using some starting fluid or carbu-clean in to the intake manifold.

Just take off the air filter and spray in to the manifold (about 2 secons of spray only) LOOK OUT FOR EXPLOSIONS!!!

If the engine starts and then stalls, then it is a fuel problem.

My car will not start. It's got spark, turns over, fuel pump sounds to work. maybe it's the fuel filter?you can test for fuel pressure on the fuel rail. Get a pressure tester and see what you have. You should have 50-60 psi. A filter is cheap enough ($14.00 for that car) and easy enough to change. Its close to the fuel tank in back on the drivers side. I believe you have to have the coupling removal tool but they are cheap as well. The problem is that you can easily start throwing money and parts at it hoping to hit it and save yourself some money but end up spending more than if you took it to a mechanic to have it fixed. The shotgun approach to auto repair is always expensive. My car will not start. It's got spark, turns over, fuel pump sounds to work. maybe it's the fuel filter?Turn the key to %26quot;on%26quot; and reach under the car and hit the fuel tank a couple times with your fist or your foot if you can kick it.

Then try to start it, If it starts up your fuel pump is dead.

The reason I think it is your fuel pump %26amp; not the filter is because a restricted fuel filter usually causes the vehicle to lose power under a load. Your car was hard to start but you did not mention it running poorly once it did start.

In summary, I think your fuel pump is not %26quot;waking up%26quot; when you first turn on the key but if you can give it a shake by hitting the tank it will probably jar it to life and work until you shut the key off again. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank on your car.

If it starts, drive it somewhere where you can work on it. The fuel tank will have to be drained %26amp; lowered to replace the pump if it is like most cars. Sometimes you get lucky and can access it through the trunk, I am not sure on a 2002 Malibu.

Good Luck!

Technically, a fuel pump becomes defective when owners allow their tanks to fall below 1/4 of their tank.

Chevy Astro Van Check Engine Light On - Air Idler Problem ???

Need someone who really know a Chevy Astro Van (1993 4.3L 2WD Extended Passenger Van)

This is How it happens.

1. Fuel injector bad, change the Fuel injector.

2. Map senor bad, Change new map senor.

3. Air idle problem, Change Air idle sensor.

4. Regulator bad, no pressure, Change the Fuel injector/regulator set again.

5. Everything looks fine.

6. Engine Run on idle for 10 mins till engine is hot, Check Engine light is on again. Computer Shows that it is the Air idle problem again.

7. Change fuel line and Fuel pump.

Is this because I did not clean the Air Throttle Body or the Air idle sensor is bad again, or something else.

Computer said ok to drive, and it is ok to drive, but if i let the vehicle idle for 20 seconds, the check engine light will come on again with the same message.

Can someone Help !!!!!Chevy Astro Van Check Engine Light On - Air Idler Problem ???Dear Astro Van-

Well it looks like you had your work cut out for you.

There is one detail that I really needed to know, and that was which 4.3L was in this Astro. The 8th VIN Digit will either be a %26quot;Z%26quot; or a %26quot;W%26quot; which indicates a Vortec 4.3L or the TBI Engine.

OK Here we go.

On the vans that are equipped with the %26quot;Z%26quot; motor they use a fuel injector setup that was a good idea, just poor execution.

The injector system used a Timed Fuel Distributor with these black soda straws that went out to each cylinder within the intake manifold. Depending on the type, (Generation 1 or Generation 2) you would either be required to replace the entire fuel distrubutor system, or you could replace the individual injector that wad bad.

These vans were also equipped with a TBI, (Throttle Body Injector). This looks like a modified Carbuetor with two large fuel injectors placed over a two barrel throttle plate and venturi body. If this is your system, then you need to check the base gasket on this TBI Unit. The base gaskets were notorious for becoming brittle and cracked . If you remove the air cleaner and open the throttle plates you may see a chunk of black hanging out down below the throttle plates. If you see this, this is the base gasket and it cracked and needs to be replaced.

The Idle Air Control Solenoids were also an issue on these vans. This is a round part that will have a plug on it normally near the base of the TBI Unit. This will just require a quick replacement.

The last thing that it might be on this van is the electronically controlled EGR Valve. This valve used to cause this van some trouble from time to time, and I know there was a warranty campaign on these parts. the valve will need to be replaced if this is the case.

My advice to you is to take the van to your local Chevrolet Dealership and let them have a look at it. If there are any warranty campaigns that need to be done to the vehicle, they may be covered under warranty with little or no charge to you. But the Chevrolet Dealership will have to make that determination.

Keep in mind that, yes you are paying a little more at the dealerships, but they are also working on that product all of the time and have the most up to date service information available to them.

I work in a Chevrolet Dealership. Most of the time when customers come in with trouble with their Chevrolet Products, they have taken them to a private shop for issues such as the ones that you are experiencing. Normally when these vehicles leave the Dealership, they are not having problems anymore. Also Chevrolet backs up all of the work their technicians perform with a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty on the work and the parts.

It may cost you a few buck more, but I own two Chevrolet's and the piece of mind is worth the extra money I pay.

I hope I helped you out! Good Luck!Chevy Astro Van Check Engine Light On - Air Idler Problem ???Since you stated this is a %26quot;W%26quot; engine, my guess is that it will be the base gasket on the TBI Unit, which will mean removal of this unit to replace the gasket. If this does nit solve the problem, then you have an ECM Issue, and only the dealer can repair it.

Chevy Astro Van Check Engine Light On - Air Idler Problem ???the idle air control code does not mean the sensor is bad for sure.

you need to test the wireing harness.

and a sludged up throttle body could also cause this code

when you replaced it the first time was the passage clean?

if the throttle body is clean you need to test the wire harness

for 5 volt reverence and return signals from the sensor.

Car MPG problem, can any one help?

So i have a 2003 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl, 3.3 L, Automatic 4-speed it the mpg on this is 17 city, 24 Hwy but when i drive around the city my gas just vanishes!! It feels like instead of 17 city i am getting like 7. Recently the Check Engine light, i when to the station and they changed the fuel pump. So i want to know what might be the possible problem for my low MPG (even thought 17 is already low) and how can i fix it?Car MPG problem, can any one help?have you have a tune up? a severly clogged air filter and worn out spark plugs can do this also you may want to check the o2 sensor if that doesnt work properly it screws up your air fuel ratio causing you to use lots more gas than your engine needsCar MPG problem, can any one help?well lots could be the cause, but i would look at a few things tune up stuff plugs wires air filter things then I would look at the fuel pressure regulator make sure the fuel pump is working properly. the 3.3 should get a lot better mpg so you have a problem. make sure no leaks on the ground also. check to see if the air hose from valve cover to air box is ok.Car MPG problem, can any one help?A check engine light usually is not an indicator for a bad fuel pump - you may have gotten ripped off...the catalytic converter may be bad, which leads to poor fuel mileage, as well as some of the other suggestions. Also keep your tire pressures properly inflatedCar MPG problem, can any one help?I hate to mention this but are you leaking gas anywhere? 7 mpg would be a world's record I think. If it was running VERY rich you'd be getting backfires.

It would be well worth it to get it checked ASAP with gas prices where they are.Car MPG problem, can any one help?I have a dodge dakota 6 cyl there might be engine sluge or is it or isnt in overdrive?

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 1997?

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 150,000 on it. It is giving me problems cutting off. Most of the time it happens right after it is cranked and i get on the road. It just acts like it is either starved for gas or flooded. You can feel it skip a few times and then off it goes. It will usually start right back. Weird part is, I changed the fuel pump, idle air motor and crankshaft sensor. After each part change, there was a change in how the jeep cranked and it seemed ok for about four days. Then right back to the same old problem.

When I crank it, the motor spins for several seconds before starting. After i changed the parts, it was starting soon as I turned the key, but after about four days, it was back to spinning a bit before starting. Changing the crankshaft sensor made the most difference. I really thought it was fixed, but after four days, it started cutting off again.

Never saw anything like this before. Got any ideas????

The last repair change computer is necessary change the harness Cables

You may consider buying a newer one at websites like

You have to know the basics are good before a diagnosis can be done. Since the vehicle is 11 years old, it should have had a new set of spark plug wires. If not, install them with new spark plugs if the plugs need changing too. If your Jeep has a distributor cap and rotor, change those as well.

If then it still stalls and will crank ok but not start, immediately check for good spark with the spark tester below. Check for similar owner complaints at http://www.mycarstats.com You might invest in an OBD-II computer error code reader from Actron ($60) to help you diagnose the problems.

Recently my car wouldn't start i had a friend come over and look at it and he said it was the fuel pump.I let the my friend change the fuel pump but now the car sputters and misfire like its not gettn enough gas can u guys give me any ideas on what to do or what should i do? this is the pump i bought from the warehouse http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/BMW/325is/VDO/Fuel_Pump/1992/Base/6_Cyl_2-dot-5L/W0133-1607276.html?loc=Passenger+Side%26amp;tlc=Engine+%26+Drivetrain also the pump is not showing me how much gas i have1992 BMW 325is car problems?Pumps go bad because of restriction. So you might keep blowing pumps if you still have a restriction.

    Change the fuel filter.

Check that the tank is not building up vacuum from a bad vent valve, (listen for hissing when cap opened).

Put a meter on the fuel rail and make sure it is not too high from a bad regulator or return valve.

The pump you showed was an OEM by VDO so is an exact replacement. If the fuel gauge is not showing right, I suspect either you did not plug it in right, the gauge is bad, or there is a bad ground to the tank unit. Check the ground connection to the chassis for the pump, because it won't work right with a bad or corroded ground.1992 BMW 325is car problems? The pump may be defective (since the sender is likely built in to it. Car surge while running every time it gets hot?

I have a daewoo lanos model 2000. Every time it gets hot it runs rough and surging. I changed the fuel injector, fuel pump, spark plug, spark plug cable wire, and ignition coil but still did not solve the problem. I send it to shop to check for computer but they did not find the cause. Four mechanics have different findings. Is there anybody out there who have the same experience and how did they solve the problem. Thanks..Car surge while running every time it gets hot?Since this seems to be a temperature related problem, changing stuff like the fuel pump etc is not going to solve it.

Try changing (or testing first) the coolant temperature sensor. This relays information to the ECU which then adjusts fuelling / ignition accordingly for the engine's temperature

    How come my car dies?

I changed the fuel filter, and changed the fuel pump twice...It will run, sometimes for a day then just dies...after about 30 minutes,it restarts and runs for only a few hours ...what can it be that is doing this to me?How come my car dies? Some of the most common electronic parts that get %26quot;weak%26quot; with age and may fail (engine dies) at normal operating temperature:

    1. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

    2. Distributorless Ignition (DIS) Module

    3. DIS Coil

    4. Crankshaft Position Sensor

These are the ones I've encountered. Definitely try the starting fluid test before you investigate the ignition and/or engine management systems. How come my car dies?Take it for a diagnosis. There is one bad part somewhere that is causing this problem. With all the electronics in a car today, it is almost impossible for an individual to tell what is wrong without running a diagnostic test. It could be in the electrical system, not in the distribution of gas to the engine that has a problem. How come my car dies?you should consider consulting your car mechanic to solve the problem before it damages other parts of your car and this will cost you more. How come my car dies?there are so many reason why engine shuts off ..

better take it to nearest shop..

only on actual test the car can be diagnose,

but we can give you few ideas where to start or look up.

    check for any vacuum leaks,

check clean throttle body ( EFI engine )

check clean carburetor assy ( naturally aspirated engine )

    check / adjust valve clearance

check / replace / adjust sparkplugs

    check ignition timing,

    check engine oil.

    check for any engine overheating,

check ignition coil..might have internal short, when it gets hot with the engine, it shuts offHow come my car dies? These sorts of problems are almost always specific to the car's make, model, and, year. No car is made to behave like that (although there are times I could swear the car I had was dying on me better than any of the things it was designed to do!) so the failure is the result of a particular weakness.

An important clue can be gained with starting fluid. When it dies you have about half an hour that it isn't working, so in that time open the air cleaner box, spray a couple second blast of starting fluid on the filter, close the box and see if the engine responds with a short vroom when you try to start it. If so the fuel delivery is the problem; if not, the ignition is failing.

How do you fix a fuel injected car that has gas flooded spark plugs and wont turn on?

I have a 97 Nissan Altima GXE. It idled pretty rough for about two months until one day it turned off on me and didn't want to turn on no more. I changed the fuel filter, Fuel pressure regulator, and checked the gas pump and it pumps fine. I took the spark plugs out and they were soaked in gasoline. when i crank the engine to try and turn it on it just smells like gas. What could be the problem and solution? How do you fix a fuel injected car that has gas flooded spark plugs and wont turn on?Nissan has always had a problem with their cars flooding. I don't know why but usually just changing the plugs helps. Tsb advises customers to start car with accelerator held halfway down. They also have a redesigned starter that makes the engine turn faster when cranking. If you continue to have the problem it maybe from a different source like an injector leaking or fuel pressure may be too high. pull the vacuum line off of regulator and make sure that is not leaking also. How do you fix a fuel injected car that has gas flooded spark plugs and wont turn on?what plugs do u use ive used new plugs did same thing so i bought cheap ones like champions they burn hot try that

Can gas mix in with your oil?

my garage smells like gasoline... a lot... i have an oil spot on the floor and i know i need to change my fuel pump, but can gas mix in with the oil?? i am wondering if the spot on the floor is oil with gas in it... i just changed my fuel filter/ spark plugs/ dist cap is it possible that some how the gas mixed in with the oil is that not even possible??Can gas mix in with your oil?Don't listen to the last bozo! The second guy is right. That is how you get gas in the oil, but it is very bad for you car. Extreemly detrimental... You see, oil lubricates your engine's parts and gasoline doesn't. In my experience with my cars I have had the fuel get past the rings, considerable power loss, and fouled spark plugs, and black smoke out of the back. Smell the fluid on the ground. May sound stupid but my nose hasn't failed me yet. 2nd check to see where the leak or leaks are coming from, sometimes you can have an oil leak dripping from your oil pan and a fuel leak from a fuel line that is dripping onto your drip pan and running down your pan and mixing on the ground with the oil causing you to think that you just have an oil leak or gas in your oil when really you have two leaks ending up together on the ground. Always inspect where they are coming from first. an easy an effective way to do this is to clean the area under your car and the ground where the leak is. place a rag where the fluid gathers. and when you see the drops fall look under you car to find wher it is comming from. and look at the colors, and then smeel them too.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas! Can gas mix in with your oil?gas in the oil is possible, but usually in only 2 conditions, first being worn and cracked intake manifold gaskets where the fuel can enter directly in to the crank case ventilation area then in to the oil , or the 2nd being extremely worn piston rings where the fuel during the compression stroke slips past the rings and going directly in to the oil, but you would have a very noticeable power loss as well as a very smokey car.

good luck mrgreg1Can gas mix in with your oil?IDK...LOL thats a good question. My friends car wouldn't start one day and we were both stranded on the freeway, then his crackhead stepfather came, raised the hood poured a little gas where the oil was suppose to be and *presto* you wouldn't believe the car started right up after we were trying are best to start it. So I don't know thats a good question. Can gas mix in with your oil?it is possible, but i doubt that the source of the smell is that. there are a few areas in that car that will give you an area prone to leaks, and many of them are hard to locate. even a loose gas cap will create that smell. Can gas mix in with your oil?gas and oil are the same thing they are both forms of refined petroleum, basically like ice and water. So yes they can mix and that is no big deal.

    Camaro problems!!!?

I got my fuel pumped changed on friday, and today it did not want to start. Its getting towed back to the mechanic now, what do you think the problem is NOW??

    1994 Chevy Camaro 3.4 sv6

cant be the alternator cause I changed that this past august and cant be the battery cause that was changed in august as well

yes the car still cranked and i did not leave anything on. I really do not think it is the battery...

I just found out that my car was not starting because I did not have any gas. My meter was telling me that a had half a tank of gas. The gauge is messed up, and its going to be $500 to fix. I could not afford to get it fixed. One of my fiends is going to try to find one at a junk yard. I just have to always make sure I have gas, and think about how much in my head.Camaro problems!!!?Set your trip meter everyday and when you reach a certain number of miles then fill up. I done it for years with an old Ford.Camaro problems!!!?Write down your mileage when you get gas, and stick it somewhere in your car. Keep track of your mileage, and plan on getting gas every 250 miles. Or, if your tripometer still works, set it a zero, fill your tank, and just keep track of how far you have gone.

One point - If your car is cranking, your battery is working.Camaro problems!!!?If you do not want to replace the gas gauge, use the trip odometer. Figure out how many miles you get from a tank of gas, say 250 miles, when you fill up reset the trip odometer to 0, give yourself a cusion and when it hits 200 miles fill up and repeat the process.Camaro problems!!!?first of all did the gague work before you had the new fuel pump put in? if so ,whoever installed the pump messed up.because the float that indicates fuel level is attached to the fuel pump, if installed incorrectly it will give you a false readingCamaro problems!!!?First off, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump setup. If a mechanic replaced the pump friday and now the sending unit's out, I'm dang sure the mechanic jacked it up somehow and therefore accountable to fix it Period! It is most like the wire is disconnected to the send unit. Good Luck!

  • 92 350 engine chevy?

Yes i have a question My friend has a Chevy 92 truck with a 350. I think it has the tbi.We want to convert it into carburator we changed the intake and has a 4 barrel Edelbrock carb 600.we changed the cam and other small stuff. I believe we have to change the fuel pump. Would we have to put a manual fuel pump? How can we do that.I know for ford we have to change the timing chain cover and add a manual. but not sure about chevy. Would we have to change the distributor also? Need help soon. Thanks.92 350 engine chevy? These changes will NOT allow the truck to pass a smog test. Can you afford 8 miles to the gallon? Unless you are going to race this truck ,you should reverse action and go back stock.92 350 engine chevy?I would say the fuel pump will definately need to be changed, the injection pump will produce way too much pressure for a carb and overwhelm the float needle valve. I'm not sure if the fuel tank has an internal pump but if not you should be able to fit an inline pump between the tank %26amp; carb.

Best to fit a pressure regulator too as this will reduce 'surge' and even out the flow.(Malpasi's Filter King) is good.

Sorry, can't help on the distributor but I don't see why it would need to be changed .Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!92 350 engine chevy?First you have to see if the engine has a place on the side( should be on the passengers side) to mount a fuel pump. I would say it probably does not. So your going to have to install either a aftermarket electric pump for a carb or put a fuel regulator to lower the fuel pressure on the factory pump. If your still running the computer you should keep the distributor,if not replace it with a older pre computer HEI unit.92 350 engine chevy?Check the passenger side of the block for a plate that might be bolted to the engine. If it's there then remove it and there will be a cavity where a manual fuel pump can be mounted. However now you might have a problem with the camshaft because the manual fuel pump is activated by a rod that runs off a lobe on the camshaft. the lobe pushes on the rod that in turn pushes on a lever on the fuel pump to make it work. Since your truck has an electric fuel pump in the tank then it's very possible the lobe on the cam isn't there. But then you said you did replace the camshaft so it's probably there...you'll have to check it out. You can eliminate the mechanical fuel pump and use an inline electric fuel pump with a pressure regulator. Gut the in tank electric fuel pump and block the return line and install an aftermarket fuel pump inline someplace close to the fuel tank because an electric pump pushes fuel much better than it sucks fuel. The distributor may be a problem if the computer that controls all this stuff handles the distributor timing based upon air-fuel mixture. I'd buy aftermarket just to be sure. Bought all this other stuff why stop now?

Kia sedona 2.9crdi 53plate fuel filter change?

does any 1 no how to change a fuel filter and how hard is it, r they manuel pump or automatic ?Kia sedona 2.9crdi 53plate fuel filter change?most newer cars have the fuel filter in the engine bay attached to the firewall. Trace the line from the fuel line to the back of the engine. It is usually a black housing with brass fittings.

Take a look, beside a flare nut wrench, it's all pretty much just nuts and a banjo bolt. Just make sure the fuel system is depressurized before you go messing with it and have lots of rags handy for spilled fuel.Kia sedona 2.9crdi 53plate fuel filter change? The pump is in the gas tank. The filter is in the engine compartment It is easy to change, you will need a 19mm wrench and a 5/8

    unscrew the filter

    That is it.

How to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter?

Hello, I plan on changing my fuel filter and I pulled the fuse out for the pump and it idled for about a half hour and then I had to shut it off because I didn't have anymore time. How long does it take for the fuel in the lines to be burned off after you take the fuse out or is there a different way? Thanks. How to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter?Just start to take the line off and let what's in the line drain out, that's all I ever do. Just make sure to catch the fuel in drain pan of some sort so you don't have a puddle of flammable fuel laying there. How to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter? At a low fuel rate like Idle it can cause a siphin effect. But if you rev it up you will burn the gas out at a faster rate and it will sputter and die. You cannot get everything out. You can also take off the gas cap. That will relive any pressure that might be in the tank. Also you may have pulled the wrong fues dubble check. How to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter?Pull the fuel pump relay in the underhood relay/fuse box.

Crank engine for a few seconds and let it dry out.

    Pressure is gone.

I hope you just pulled the wrong relay if your car kept running, otherwise, you have other issues! Like elctrical issues.

Also, pulling the gas cap does nothing to help you as the fuel in between the pump and the injectors is what is under pressure. Not the fuel tank. How to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter?A 4 cylinder may run a long time before the pressure goes down enough to kill the engine. You may have pulled the wrong fuse. Listen near the tank to hear if the pump is running when you turn the key. Might need a helper here.

There is a fuel pump kill switch that activates in an accident. It may be in the trunk. Look in the owner's manual if you have one. Hit it with your hand and the reset button will pop up, shutting off the fuel pump. Press the reset after you are done. How to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter?go under the hood and find the fuel rail...on the fuel rail the is a schrader valve..it looks like a valve stem for a tire....take the cap off and press the valve core with a skrew driver...this will releave the pressure.....gas will still be in the lines but not under pressure so it will drip out....make sure the car is off befor pressing the valve coreHow to release the fuel pressure in a 96 cavalier? for changing the fuel filter?Cover the line with a rag and crack it open . The wires had just been changed and we went through 3 fuel pumps before one fit with an adaptor but the service engine light is still on. There was one wire left with nowhere to put it, and that was how it was when the dealership finished replacing the wires. Now the gas is leaking. How can we fix this?Service engine light is on after installing fuel pump on 2000 suburban, code is PO452 pres sensor low.?Hey, I'm no mechanic but when my '98's pump went I had to buy the whole unit (pump, gauge and filter) which cost an arm and a leg. I was told you can get a code with air in the line (vacuum issue) or the new part not being exactly right. Was it a delco replacement or a Napa or the like? Try letting it bleed out some more fuel and see if that clears the code. Remember you have to completely shut off the ignition after the bleeding to get the computer to reset. Hope it helps. Good Luck, StewService engine light is on after installing fuel pump on 2000 suburban, code is PO452 pres sensor low.?Here's how you fix it...take it back to the dealership and make them fix it. There shouldn't be any extra wires; this means that you still have the wrong part. It shouldn't be that hard to find the right one. The leaking gas is a signakl that the existing part is bad or damaged, or improperly connected. This is very dangerous and can cause a fire...have the vehicle towed in.

Hope this helped.Service engine light is on after installing fuel pump on 2000 suburban, code is PO452 pres sensor low.?I looked at the ACDelco and other brand replacement fuel pumps for the 2000 5.3L and saw none of them appear to be made for Suburbans with %26quot;Robust Fuel System Sender%26quot;. They say their pumps fit Suburbans with %26quot;TDC%26quot; stamped on the wiring harness.

Maybe your Suburban has the mysterious %26quot;Robust Fuel System Sender%26quot; pump and the mechanic is trying to get a %26quot;TDC%26quot; pump to work.

    Fuel pump problems?

I had the fuel pump and sending unit replaced in 04 on a 1500 gmc pick up and now the pump is dead again. How hard it is to change my self? what causes the pump to go out so quickly.Fuel pump problems?when the first pump was changed, did they also change the fuel filter? did you use a name brand pump or brand x ?

the fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel itself so running the tank low not only lets the pump suck up all of the crud at the bottom of the tank but starves the pump of its lubrication. the only way to change the pump is to drop the tank and this could be tricky if it is full of fuel i think gas weighs about 13 pounds a gallon, do the math hope this helpsFuel pump problems?a repair man should see itFuel pump problems?the fuel pump itself is fairly easy but you need to find out why it is going out so fast. my chevy 1500 (1992) has around 256000 miles on its first fuel pump. i think you may have something else wrong and the pump dieing is a symptom of that.Fuel pump problems?are you sure its the pump and not the relay that gives it power?Fuel pump problems? You may want to check the wiring into the pump itself. They have a tendency to corrode, making the truck act like the fuel pump is dead. If that isn't the case, check the fuel pump relay. If still no success, make sure the new pump is an ACDelco unit. It may be more money, but well worth the extra. You may have difficulty changing it yourself, as you have to pull out the gas tank, which is a royal pain to do in your driveway.Fuel pump problems? If you have 3 or 4 friends around, you can unbolt the bed and lift it off the frame. The fuel pump is readily accessible at that point. The bed is pretty heavy,so be careful! If you do replace the pump yourself, make sure that the wire connector at the tank hasn't overheated due to a poor connection. This will shorten the life of the new pump also. Make sure that you don't have a stopped up fuel filter. Whether you drop the tank or pull the bed off,it's not an easy job.

    Good luck!

Hard start on 1999 Yukon Denali?

I have a problem starting my truck. It will crank, but just keeps spinning as if if is not getting any fuel. This problem of starting the truck can happen at any time, but usually during warmer months (this has been going on for a while). I could use the truck for a while then get home shut it off and then it won't start again. The problem used to correct itself after literally waiting 5 minutes. Now it seems to be getting worse. When it is running, I never had a problem stalling. The fuel pump was changed about three years ago and the filter was recently changed. When I turn the key I hear the fuel pump making noise as if it is working. I do not get any codes, except once got a P1351. Where is the fuel pump located on a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

and i want to know how to change it (if ithat's an easy thing to do) also i want to know if it is expensive... thanxWhere is the fuel pump located on a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee?I see you have several questions concerning your vehicle. Lets see if we can get you back on the road.

Your vehicles fuel pump is actually located in the fuel tank. At first I didn't like it. I was being forced to learn about vehicles all over again if I wanted to remain employed. This is not a real difficult job. Just about any shop is going to charge you 3 Hours labor which equates to about $240 on the east coast and about $300 on the west coast. I would have to make a few calls to find out the exact price of the pump but with the exception of a few GM vehicles and high line vehicles the average retail cost is about $250.

It is much easier to do this job if you have access to a car lift. Most don't so lets start with getting set to remove the fuel tank. Block your front tires and remove the positive battery cable end from the positive post on the battery. (Safety). With a hydraulic floor jack raise the rear of the vehicle by setting the hydraulic jack close to the tire on the rear axle and raising the vehicle as high as possible. Set your jack stand and then repeat this on the other side. Now you are ready. You do not have to remove the fuel from the tank but if you have more than a 1/3 of a tank you will wish you did. Remove the fuel tank fuel inlet hose and vent from the tank. Set your hydraulic jack in the middle of the tank with just a small amount of pressure to keep it from moving around as you disconnect the following. You see there are two straps on the tank. One on the left, one on the right. Loosen and remove one side of each strap. All of the tanks weight is now on the hydraulic jack so take your time. You should be able to lower the tank just a little so that you can now remove the fuel lines from the top of the tank. Disconnect the wiring harness. This will be a pig tail connector. You do not need to cut any wires. Slowly lower the jack, balancing the tank til it will go no lower. Hopefully you got your jeep up high enough that you can move the tank out from under the vehicle. If not....Get someone to help you remove the tank from the jack and slide the tank out from under the vehicle. Now if you look at the tank top you will see where the fuel lines go into the tank. This is also your access panel.Your fuel pump is just below the fuel lines. There are several different tank designs and gaining access to the pump can vary. Some have tabs at the access panel and you need to take a screwdriver and bend these tabs up. Some have snap rings and the list goes on. I am sorry but I can't be definitive about this part of the job. My guess is that if you have gotten this far without loosing it on someone or something. you will figure it out. Now you are ready to remove the fuel pump and module. Slowly pull the access panel out of the tank. The pump and module are attached to the panel. You don't know it now but you want to replace both the pump and module. These parts are purchased as a unit. (One Piece). Don't waste your time buying just the pump. The pump alone is available but what a pain. You don't know what will have to be modified if modification is necessary but mostly why kill yourself. You wouldn't order a hamburger and bun from McDonalds and put it together yourself would you? After you have installed the Pump and module assembly, reverse the steps I have outlined for you. First you might want to locate the fuel filter. I believe the fuel filter is located in the frame of the drivers side but I could be wrong. It could be part of the pump and module assembly. You have to replace the fuel filter to have a warranty on the pump and module. Anyway, put it back together the way you took it apart. Just take your time and you will be moving in less than 2 1/2 hours and you won't be pushing it. Don't forget to purchase a Chilton or Haynes Manuel for reference. Good LuckWhere is the fuel pump located on a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee? The fuel pump is inside the gas tank and the only way to access it is to lower the tank and pull it out from the top section. make sure there is no gas in the tank when you do this. This task is not for a weekend do it yourself mechanic. be very careful and do your homework before proceeding.

I have an 85 tbird that I changed over to a 4bbl carb and performance cam. I can't keep the fuel pump running?

I have a regulator on the line but the pump will only for a few seconds and shutoff. I am also using an hei dist and gear drive so a manual pump is not an option. How can I make the pump run and keep it runningI have an 85 tbird that I changed over to a 4bbl carb and performance cam. I can't keep the fuel pump running? What kind of pump? Are you sure its not self regulated? Meaning it doesn't require an in-line regulator.

If its a Holley red or blue, these do not need a regulator.

If you are using the in tank pump, you need to get 12volt power to it from the ignition, not through the computer.I have an 85 tbird that I changed over to a 4bbl carb and performance cam. I can't keep the fuel pump running? If the pump pressure is self regulating, then adding another regulator may be your problem. Remove it. Your pump may be sensing a broken fuel line and shuts itself off because it can't build up fuel line pressure.

Also, the pump doesn't have to run all the time, only when fuel line pressure drops to a predetermined value. I don't know how your fuel pump is designed.

On my car, before I start, I can hear the fuel pump. But it shuts off after a few seconds.I have an 85 tbird that I changed over to a 4bbl carb and performance cam. I can't keep the fuel pump running?if you changed from fuel injection the tank pump won't work for you. aftermarket fuel pump wired to your key on power will do the job. it'll pull the gas through the old pump ok, unless it's gummed or frozen but you say it works. they're designed to run off of the negative side of your distributor so that it only works in spurts so that if the engine quits the fuel shuts off in case of a wreck. the stock tank pump is not going to feed and or starve the 4 bbl and likely won't last long. ok for test purpose, so you can hear the cam thump, lol, find your fuel relay, take a test lamp and have a buddy turn the key on and off for you. find the wire that comes on then goes off. pull the relay and jump across from power on to that plug and you should be in business. the circuit is fused, but ford wiring is bassackwards on alot of things. save yourself alot of worry and just buy an aftermarket electric pump. i'd of just used a double roller set and manual pump and essentric, but just my BA small block ford building opinion.I have an 85 tbird that I changed over to a 4bbl carb and performance cam. I can't keep the fuel pump running?buy a holley electric fuel pump and install as close to the fuel tank as possible they push better than they pump, and should use a regulator with a gauge to keep the pressure around 7 psi, your fuel injected pump is putting out over 32 psi way to much pressure for a carb.check out www.summitracing.com for all the parts you will need to install the pump and fix your dilemmaI have an 85 tbird that I changed over to a 4bbl carb and performance cam. Changing fuel filter on 98 chevy k1500?

I was about to change the fuel filter on my truck and it looks preaty strate forward looks like the filter has pipe fittings on it. just wanted to make sher that I did not mess this up before I started

the filter is lower than the tank is that a issue or would the pump some how stop the gas from going down with gravity (cause that would suck if all the gas came out)

should I put some teflone tape or somthing on the fittings wen I put it back in so it does not leak

I already depressurized the system by disconnecting the fuel pump relay while it was runningChanging fuel filter on 98 chevy k1500?Don't worry about the small amount of gas that will come out. The pump check valve will keep it in the tank.

Don't use thread sealer on the fittings. This is a flare fitting. It will seal itself when tightened. Using teflon tape may actually cause it to leak.Changing fuel filter on 98 chevy k1500?You dont have to do any of extra work. Just remove the fuel filter and dont panic if gas come out. Its come only little bit then its stop. Then put new one in it.Changing fuel filter on 98 chevy k1500?First, you will have to unscrew the plastic clip that surrounds the filter and holds the filter to the bottom of the frame rail. Pull it down some and this will give you room to work. Then take your open end wrenches and remove the engine side of the filter first. Hold one side of the fitting and turn the other side the opposite way to take it loose. Stuff a rag in the end of the filter. Now take off the tank side of the line and stuff another rag in the line to hold back most of the gasoline from leaking down your arm. Make sure you find the arrow on the side of the new filter and point it towards the engine. Now screw it all back together. You don't need any teflon tape on the threads. That would not help. Just don't crossthread the fittings. This is not too hard to change but you will get a small amount of gas on you. Now go wash it off of you.

I already disconnected the system by disconnecting the fuel pump relayChanging fuel filter on 98 gmc k1500?Just remove the filter, some fuel will leak out from the line. The fuel will not come out because the fuel pump is not on.Changing fuel filter on 98 gmc k1500?You should be fine as long as you have the relay out and cranked the fuel line dry.

Some will still be left, but at least it's not coming at you at ~50 PSI.Changing fuel filter on 98 gmc k1500?just make sure you put it in the same way you took it out because there should be a floater thats attached to the fuel pump you always put that in first but other then that you should be good

  • How much would it usually cost to have a Fuel Pump installed in a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant?

Over the weekend, my other car broke down on my lady while she was driving; from what she tell's me, she was driving and the check engine light went on with the battery, and oil light, and the brakes and steering wheel locked up, so pretty much all the things that would tell me that a car died on you. So i'm thinking it's the Fuel Pump that needs to be changed. Or Crankshaft Positioner Sensor? would any one know what it would sound like to them? and if it is, how much does it run for to have the fuel pump replaced, with the part in hand? I usually change everything on this car my self, but i don't want to mess with the gas tank... I don't want to die....How much would it usually cost to have a Fuel Pump installed in a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant? To replace the pump one hour labor is plenty.

have your vehicle diagnosed before replacing parts.

    1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee problem?

I posted this the other day thought I had it fixed.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado, 150,000 on it.

Got any ideas????1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee problem?First thing I would do would be to scan the engine control computer and see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes present. If there are codes present, they may point you in the right direction. Guessing what the fault is and putting parts on can turn into an expensive proposition.1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee problem?Well, i might say get it to a trusted mechanic, and have him run a ODBII test, (On Board Diagnostic), see if the trouble comes out on the computer... this might be a electrical problem and not mechanical...%26quot;OR%26quot;...

I had a similar problem with my Silverado a few months ago, long story short it was my fuel Filter and Fuel Pump...after both were replaced it's been like new...%26gt;have you checked/replaced your FILTER? maybe it time for a complete TUNE UP.

Best wishes, take you time and check everything twice.

Possibly the filter on the pump inside the tank is clogged to.

150,000 miles yea its a filter1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee problem?Have you checked the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issues published by your manufacturer? You can get a quick listing of the TSB subject titles from Edmunds:

http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/Maint1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee problem?this is most likely not going to show up on acodes only scan. two options that I can think of is 1go throgh all the electrical plug ins make sure they are tight no bent or broken pins. with the motor running grab and slowly shake the wire harnesses if a wire is breaking or is rubbing on ground while driving this should duplicate simptoms if engine misses or dies while wiggling harness find bad wire. the other option is to drive with a fuel pressure gauge .and ascanner that can display live sensor data until it acts up watching data screen at ight moment may give you aclue also when it dies and before it restarts test spark fuel pressure and injector control signal one is not there it tthen that will tell you where to go.if I can be of more help email me through this forum with results.

What could be causing my car to not start sometimes and it's not the battery?

The vehicle I have is a 1999 dodge avenger. When the car wont start, I can keep trying to get it to crank over, while holding the gas pedal down and it will eventually start. It will sputter at first sometimes and then it will start after a couple more cranks. I had the fuel pump changed and it's not the problem and the battery is fine. I've been told it could be the ignition switch that is bad. This could be the problem if my vehicles original key isn't being used and had a computerized chip in it, and instead a copied key is being used, that can mess up the switch.so this could be my problem because I am using a non computerized copy key. Also, my car alarm sometimes goes off when it shouldn't and I've been told that this could be causing the problem. I need to figure out how to disarm the alarm wires that may be the reason it is acting goofy. The wiring is under the steering wheel, I've been told, so maybe that's the reason why, when I do keep the gas pedal down, the vehicle starts. The wiring may be getting held down from the alarm . I don't know? The last thing it could be, is some sort of sensor, like I've had in the past from a previous vehicle I owned. I'm already spending money unnecessarily, trying to figure out the dumb things problem. It's driving me crazy!! Please Help!!!!!What could be causing my car to not start sometimes and it's not the battery?99 avengers don't have a chip in key. If the alarm is the horn honking style, it disarms with a switch connected to the door locks. Sounds more like a electrical or spark issue but more likely a fuel delivery issue since you have to hit the gas and it sputters. What could be causing my car to not start sometimes and it's not the battery? You might find out if this dodge has a neutral safety starter switch which can keep it from starting. This has alot to do with it not starting from time to time which is intermediate no starts.Contact a parts store or a repair shop or dealership they can tell you if it has one in the ignition system.hgm20002000@yahoo.comWhat could be causing my car to not start sometimes and it's not the battery?im a girl yes i know but there are many things that could be wrong with it i might not be right but i only know 3 things it could be the coil pack on the side of your motor, spark plugs, or your fuel line could be cloggedWhat could be causing my car to not start sometimes and it's not the battery?I doubt it would be the key, after all it does start, if it was the key it wouldn't start at all, when did you last service it?What could be causing my car to not start sometimes and it's not the battery?take it to a Mitsubishi mechanic. they made it, despite the dodge name.

I have a question, and it does appear it is not the Alternator. Can a Fuel Pump slowly Die?

Hello, its me with my 1995 Ford Escort 1.9L Auto again! I have an update: I dont think its the Alternator (why the battery light came on once is beyond me. Could it be I have a Ford?) :) And it runs... but when I am in 'D' or 'R' or any drive gear, I need to put it in Neutral (or Park whe its not moving) and give it gas to avoid it stalling.

It runs with hesitation. I am not sure why. I took the air filter -out,- because it was dirty. No real improvement. Still acts the same.

I wonder if my Fuel Pump is dying. If it was, how could I drive on the highway at 70MPH and 75MPH? It seem to have less power, it downshifted twice to get up a slight incline (4th to 3rd, then back into 4th and then back to 3rd to get up a slight incline at 70MPH, and it dipped to 65MPH... before all this started, it could handle 70 and accelerate to 75MPH Easy. -Sounds- like Fuel Delivery. Hence my main question.)

I even wonder is new Plugs will help me. Could it be they are not woing a good job anymore? They were cleaned....

All this happened so suddenly. Ther guy at the store said my issue may be the Idle COntrol Valve. It costs $75 and takes 2 screws to remove, and i put the sensor back on it, and thats it. I wil know if that helps any later. I also bought the Fuel Filter, and wil have it on this weel (probably.)

So my main question is about the Fuel Pump, if they can suddenly begin their swan song and restrict fuel as well, and also what a Throttle Position Switch is.

PS: I will also read the Chilton bok when I have found it. I founf I already know a lot of the diagnosing, but they also oversimplify and leave stuff out when telling how to do a repair, and i cant even change my own fuel filter. I know how to look at the arow, but I have no jack and tools. Plus, you only look at those books when your car throws mystery problems at you, like mine. We did replace the Distributor Coil, and it des start now where it wouldnt before.. nt it hesittes and I topped of the coolant, addeds Head Gasket sealer because i want my radiator flushed to and it did get hot, and now am where I am now. Just drove on highway, it will die at thelight if I do not gas it in Neutral, othersie it runs under throttle....)

*** It also started before the Coil was on immediately after being lowered from the Tow Truck. I hope that helps. Then it didnt start again until the Distributor Coil, then it overheated (???.) Now it runs as it does. Thanks. PS2: Never left parking lot when overheated, but we did keep at it and it stalled out itslef due to heat. Cooled back sown and started fine. Hence my Head Gasket radiator stuff, as a Precaution. Not sure if that happened, seems like not. Wasnt for long enough...

Thanks, I appreciate the LEGITIMATE answers. Thank You.

Im a Customer Service Representative that loves cars, not an ASE Master Mechanic.....I have a question, and it does appear it is not the Alternator. Can a Fuel Pump slowly Die?I would worry about your fuel filter before your pump. Your filter is probably so filled with debris that the fuel flow is restricted, even totally cutting off. Your theory on an intermittently working pump is possible, but I would only consider it after the filter is replaced.I have a question, and it does appear it is not the Alternator. Can a Fuel Pump slowly Die?Could be a clogged fuel filter. An electric fuel pump will just quit on you with no warning. If you can, get a mechanic to check your fuel pressure.I have a question, and it does appear it is not the Alternator. Can a Fuel Pump slowly Die?Could be a misfire, sensor, or (fingers crossed) the tranny. If I were you I would have the plugs checked, and the IACV checked out first. Good luck

How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)?

My engine stopped running a few days ago. We looked at it and have determined that no fuel is getting to the engine (or not enough). A day or two later I was able to start the engine, but turned it off after a few seconds and then it would not start again afterward.

Are there any specific signs or clues (symptoms, if you will) that will help me determine whether the problem is the pump itself or just the filter, before I go pulling things apart? A Ford guy also suggested the possibility of a problem with the relay, but I'm not sure what that is.

To help you help me, here is what I can tell you... There is no problem with the electrical. The car powers up just fine, and when I turn the key to start the engine, it tries to start but the engine never actually kicks in. Our neighbor brought over some kind of spray, opened the tube were the air filter goes, and sprayed some in and told me to try to start the car. The engine started, but only ran for short time. It was at that point he said it might be the fuel pump.

I bought the car used from a friend long ago. I don't recall EVER having the fuel filter changed, and I highly doubt the guy I bought it from did, either. I have done a lot of off-roading in the desert, too. These are all good reasons why the fuel filter could be the problem.

I'm on a super tight budget, otherwise I would just take it in and say %26quot;here, figure it out please%26quot;. I'd like to try to figure out what exactly the problem is myself, that way I'm only paying for what actually must be done.

    Thanks in advance.

If you need more information in order to help me, give me your email or something and I will get back to you that way.How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)?Your friend sprayed starting fluid into the intake. The fact that it started %26amp; ran for a couple of seconds was the starting fluid burning off.

First, make SURE the car is not out of gas! Check to make sure that the fuse to the fuel gauge is not blown. On that model Ford, when that fuse blows, the gauge STAYS at the position it was when it blew, even if you turn the car off %26amp; turn it back on. It APPEARS to be working and it appears that you have gas but the gauge will NOT go down to the E.

The NEXT thing you need to do is check for a blown fuel pump fuse. If THAT'S good, then:

Take the gas cap off, put your ear up to the tank, %26amp; have someone turn the key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position (not the %26quot;crank%26quot; position). You should hear a faint whirring sound for about three seconds, then it will cut off. If NOT, then the pump is not working. This means that either no electricity is getting to the pump, OR the pump is bad.

Behind the side panel, just in front of the passenger door, will be an electrical component about the size of a walnut. This component is called the %26quot;inertia%26quot; or %26quot;rollover%26quot; switch. Its' purpose is to shut off the electricity to the fuel pump in case of an accident. Sometimes the switch goes off for no reason, and has to be reset. There will be a button on the side of this switch. Push this reset button and retest to see if the pump starts working.

If this doesn't work, then you'll need to get a test light and test the wiring to see if and where the electrical circuit is not closing. Start with the wires AT the tank and work your way forward until you find electricity flowing for those three seconds that the switch is on. If you have 12v flowing into the tank and the pump still isn't working, then you need to replace the pump. Otherwise, you'll have to keep testing the circuit until you find the problem. Test for 12v going INTO the inertia switch AND going out. Unplug the fuel pump relay from the fuse box and test for juice going into it. If so, plug it back in and turn the key on while feeling the relay. It should make a clicking sound that you can feel. If not, replace the relay.

If, on the other hand, you HEAR the pump running when you do the original test when you put your ear to the tank, that STILL does not necessarily mean that the pump is good. Unhook the line going into the fuel filter and do the 3-second test to see if you've got fuel flow coming out of the tank. If no flow or only a trickle, replace the pump. Then hook the filter back up %26amp; check for flow coming OUT of the filter.

Sorry for the long post, I tried to compact it as much as possible, but there are just too many tests needed to get to the bottom of the problem. How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)?fuel pump no doubt..that's why it runs until the pump gets hot then wont start.a bad fuel filter will make your truck sputter but still start. How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)?i had same prob with my saab and it was the pump and if u knocked the petrol tank it would start then cut out so i think it may be your pump has gone. How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)? Is it carburetor or FI? If you want to know if its the pump you can try to hook up a fuel pressure gauge if you can get your hands on it but you should hear the fuel pump activate as soon as you turn the key on the ON position sort of like a buzz try to have some one listen by the tank. But chances are your filter is dirty clogging the fuel port to get to the cylinder. How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)?I just went through the exact same thinking with my jeep last week, This is how went about it. I went for the fuel filter first it was only a $30 gamble but given the age of the car and the miles I had on it it should be replaced anyway so I figured that was money well spent.

Long story short it ultimately was the fuel pump. I called a shop for an estimate and it was $313 for the pump and $200 for labor. So I purchased the entire fuel pump assembly at Advance auto for $230 and with a floor jack and a buddy to help. Within 3 hours I was back on the road. It wasn't hard at all to drop the tank( and it was full ), even had to remove the trailer hitch too. I saved about $283.00 and a tow bill. How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)?OK first you find fuel filter take aloose the end going toward the front of the car , try to start the car if fuel comes out there good then its the fuel pump, If it doesn%26quot;t come out good its probably the fuel filter, you can look at the filter an should be able to c if it%26quot;s dirty. How can I tell whether I need to replace my fuel pump or fuel filter ('95 Ford Explorer)? Thanks for all the details. Every one should be so specific.

First of all try this. Strike the bottom of the fuel tank firmly with something similar to a baseball bat. Now try to start. If it starts, your fuel pump is on its last leg, possibly just giving you its last start. If it doesn't start, have a helper turn the key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position while you listen to the fuel tank after removing the gas cap. It should hum for about three seconds, then shut off. If not, check the relay. It is in the underhood fuse block. It should be labeled.

A fuel filter that has been long neglected could be the cause for a fuel pump failure. After a while, the pump has to work harder and harder to force fuel through the filter, which eventually causes it to burn itself up. Also, using fuel additives is hard on a pump and so is running low on gas. The fuel pump is most efficient when submersed in gas, keeping it running cool and having an unobstructed fuel filter. A fuel filter should be replaced once a year, or every 10-12,000 miles.

  • How to change a ford fiesta zetec 1.25 fuel tank?

    Hello

The fuel pump has gone on the ford fiesta zetec S reg (1998 i think).

Is there a manual online someone knows of that will tell me how to change it?How to change a ford fiesta zetec 1.25 fuel tank?i think the pump is accessible from under the rear seat or boot floor...there may be a removable metal plate...take it off and you should be able to Access the sender unit and pump....no need to change the whole tank

    EDIT,...

no manual needed...remove the screws...remove the cover...unscrew the sender unit, unplug the wires...fittment is reversal of removal...its simple.

Fuel pressure regulator how to install?

i got a 98 crown victoria. i think im having problems with my fuel pump.someone told me i could change my fuel pressure regulator. is that a do it yourself jobFuel pressure regulator how to install?sure you can do it.i did it on my oldsmobile. all you do is take the pressure off the tank, take the hose off the regulator, take out 2 bolts and yank it off the fuel rain. it might come off hard because of the 0-ring on the regulator.Fuel pressure regulator how to install? You can try this site http://www.autoreapair.about.com click on auto repairs then look from the search box from there. A lot of good info there.

the fuel pump is working. Does the fuel system need to be bled? I don't see how I could have done anything incorrectly.Just changed the Fuel Pressure Regulator on a 94 4.3 Vortec CPI engine. Now it won't start. I have spark and? This fuel system works with fuel pressure at around 35 psi and it will self purg any air. Suspect that there may be a problem in your installation of that pressure regulator. If all is good, first check fuel pressure, should be around that 35 psi that I mentioned. disconnect the pressure regulator and pressure should increase about 10 psi. To be sure that the computer is trying to have the injectors work, disconnect the fuel injector connector and attach a noid light to see if the injector is getting a signal to work, should flash when cranking, no flash, no start. Check all connections to be sure that you did not disconnect anything. Good LuckJust changed the Fuel Pressure Regulator on a 94 4.3 Vortec CPI engine. Now it won't start. How important is fuel filter change?

there is no way for an ordinary guy to know how durty or clean is the gasoline we pump from the gas station into our gas tank

we pressume it is a good quality, is it?How important is fuel filter change?AL fuels sold in the USA have to meet minimum requirement so gas stations don't sell bad gas. (Another example of one of those %26quot;ridiculous government regulations.) Most stations get their fuel at the same place. The difference is the additive package that is put into the tank before the tanker gets to the fuel depot. However, there are, and always will be, bits of things in the tanks. It gets there from opening the lid when the fuel is delivered, things coming loose in the holding tanks, water condensation inside the tanks, and whatever gets into your own fuel tank in your vehicle. The job of the filter is to strain this out before it gets to your injectors or carburetor and clog things up. After a while your filter gets full of this stuff and gets clogged up. Your engine gets starved for fuel and your vehicle starts pinging and getting worse gas mileage. Finally your engine won't run and your fuel pump ends up burning out. If you change your fuel filter periodically you end up saving not only gas, but also costly repairs. How important is fuel filter change?I have a GM mechanic friend who tells me to replace the fuel filter every year. He said they're getting so many more injector problems than they used to. I also have the good quality fuel system cleaner done every 30,000 miles. I had an injector replaced once. Now I do more preventitive maintenance. How important is fuel filter change?fuel filters do get dirty...

and there very easy to replace and do need replacing. How important is fuel filter change?Yes you need to get one. Even if the gas is perfect theres a chance of getting something in your tank just when you pump your gas. If the pump has a piece of sand on it and you place the pump in the gas tank. Then theres a piece of sand in your filter. How important is fuel filter change?I usually change mine about every six months. It probably doesn't need it that often but I like to make sure it stays clean. Really the only time you have to change it is when you feel your car lagging or it feels like you don't have as much power as you usually do.How important is fuel filter change?REALLY, it ads life to your care and improves fuel economy and powerHow important is fuel filter change?mid stream of pumping stop and let a drop or two come out look at the color. How important is fuel filter change?Once your fuel filter gets dirty you're car won't run correctly. There usually is some amount of trash in gas and over time it accumulates in your gas tank. How important is fuel filter change? The fuel filter being changed is very important. A dirty filter is a non-working filter; meaning dirt (imagine all the old gunk that has built up being pushed through)is getting through. As far as the quality of gas, there are some gas stations around here that water down their gas (they do this and lower their gas prices). This watered down gas burns very VERY fast. Not everyone has good quality. How important is fuel filter change?I use to be a mechanic we would see cars that never changed them and all of a sudden they wanted it changed. Well when you wait a while to change it then do it there is a chance your pump may go out. The reason for it to go out is it is use to working harder then you change your filter, it is use to the hard work so it keeps pumping hard then burns out.How important is fuel filter change? It is as important as your air, oil or any other item that improves the performance of your vehicle will in turn add to it's longevity and to your safety.

    Truck problem or Mechanic problem?

My vehicle has never worked properly when I took it to Canadian Tire in March

I was told I needed a new fuel pump and after it was replaced I needed it replaced again after just two weeks.

Now I went to a private mechanic And I was told that the fuel pump was put in backwards and that who ever put in the fuel pump screwed up all the wirer's behind the fuel box

Is that possible and do I Really have to have my fuel pump changed again.

Also if this helps ...When my truck stopped the fuel pump fuse was burnt out

    Also how do warrantys work

Thanks:SaharaTruck problem or Mechanic problem?Im a tec What kind of truck do you have and year.

Most fuel pumps go in only one way.

Most or 30-60 days warranty.Truck problem or Mechanic problem?Contact the manger of the shop who did the faulty repair. Tell them to fix the problem and anything resulting from the bad repair or you're headed to court. Even if they didn't give youa warranty a judge would rule them negligent.Truck problem or Mechanic problem? If it's a new car it should be under warranty, and no you can't put it in backward. They are takeing your money. Get a male friend to go with you, they don't cheat them as much.Truck problem or Mechanic problem?I suggest that you also contact the Customer relations Department of the company that did the original work, if they have one, or if the manager will not fix it then go to whomever is his boss. As one other party said if the vehicle is yet under warranty then go the the Customer Relations department of that make vehicle, or whatever name they have for that department. Then if they give you a run-around file civil action against them.Truck problem or Mechanic problem?all sounds fishy. If pump was put in backwards or wired wrong it would not run period, would not even start to get it out of the garage. I have often seen a dud pump that only lasted a week or two. Sounds like the private mechanic is crooked. If he really told you it was installed backwards he is truly insulting you as the vehicle would HAVE NEVER RUN IN THE FIRST PLACE. I think he is trying to sucker you into a pile of work you don't need. Go back to Canadian tire and tell a manager what has happened, but be prepared. Now that a second mechanic has had his hands in there it is possible for them to say any warranty is now void. DO NOT take the advice of threatening court as this only offends people and destroys any hope of a civil dealing. I agree with taking a male friend, preferrably one with working knowledge of vehicles. Good luckTruck problem or Mechanic problem?I would contact some sort of complaints department in your state to have them back you up. Having a third party speak on your behalf helps.

Eg here i in Australia we take this matter to the Department of Fair trading and they look into the history of the business and keep tabs on there operation.

If they mislead people then this becomes a court issue and they are summons to repay expense incurred due to there lack of professionalism.

This also helps other so that they don't pull the blanket over some elses head.

Smarten up and don't be afraid.Truck problem or Mechanic problem?you can't put a fuel pump in backward! it would have never run. what kind of truck is it? if its a GM as in GMC or Chevy it could have a bad fuel pump harness connector, this is the connector from the vehicle to the pump assembly. if its not what the hell is fuel box? OH! fuse box? Maybe? would all you people please learn to tell us what the hell kind of vehicle you got and for god sake learn how to smell, I mean spell. and proof read.Truck problem or Mechanic problem?Contact the shop that screwed your vehicle up. Sometimes they will pay for shady repairs.

If the fuel pump was in correctly, it probably caused the fuse to blow.

And the second mechanic's story sounds true and it makes sense why both fuel pumps gave you problems at the first repair facility.

Warranties vary depending on the type of repair facility. If the Canadian Tire used new parts, the part at least should be free replacement unless you drove a lot of kilometers once the part was replaced. Again, you should contact the original repair facility about that.Truck problem or Mechanic problem?it would help to know the type of vehicle. other than that i would probably trust the private mechanic. what he said is very possible. if who ever put it in wasn't paying attention or didn't know better it is easy to put them in backward.contact me at hunter1stshot@yahoo.com and i would be gald to assist you further. best of luck

1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?

I received a car that had a broken cv axle. It had been sitting up for well over a year. I replaced the axle, bought a new battery, changed the oil, and put 2 gallons of gas in it (tank was dry, figured 2 gals. would be enough to start it). When I tried to start it I got nothing. So I poured a little gas into the throttle body to prime it and it started and ran for 8-10 sec. I then disconnected the fuel line and turned on the key to see if any gas was coming through, there was none. I checked the fuses and all were good. So I thought, it needs a new fuel pump, But after reading a lot of Dodge Man's answers (hoping to find one w/o posting a question), I found that it could also be the fuel filter or a relay. I'm not a mechanic but I did work at a salvage yard for 2 summers while in college and I can replace almost ANY part on a car if I know where it is. So, where is the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and the relay for the fuel pump? Oh, and how do I check fuel flow pressure when I'm done?1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?Sorry, yes you do...The domestic car makers are still behind the times when it comes to creating an access hole for the fuel pump. %26quot;having worked in a salvage yard, you should have caught on to that%26quot;. Also, don't be surprised by the price. You may may want to verify that you still have a good 12 volt signal and a reliable ground to the pump unit; furthermore, have you checked the fuel pressure and volume? How about injector pulse. You also have not indicated if it is a 4 or 6 cylinder. Some times the cost of diagnostics by professonals can save you a lot of money. I have fixed a many car after customers have installed many hundreds of dollars just to get it towed to me.

If you have a professional fuel gauge, here are some spec's.

    8th digit on vin

    K...9-13 LBS

    M...38-38 LBS

    G...9-13 LBS

    A%26amp;D...41-47 LBS

    R...9-13 LBS

    VIN R WITH %26quot;W%26quot; BODY 26-32 LBS

    U...9-13 LBS

Now, for saftey sake, and without me having to key in injector resistance's and wire diagrams...seek professional help. NEVER attempt to drop or check fuel pressure on a high pressure system..if you have that model, yourself. You may get blinded, or worse....burned.

p.s. NEVER REPLACE A PUMP WITH OUT REPLACING A RELAY , FILTER AND PUCK UP SOCK!1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?A manual would be the best help.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?In my '92 Cavalier they had to remove the tank to get to the pump. My uncle did it. I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about. I just knew that it took them longer and cost me more money.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?Try to find a manual.

However I know that on the 1993 cavalier from the UK the fuel pump was actually inside the tank !

I think the fuel filter was up front near the throttle body...

This car was originally a german Open Ascona so may not be the same as other GM type cars.

Good luck.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?Yes, you have to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay is located under the hood, on the fire wall to the right. When you turn the key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position, the fuel pump relay clicks on for about 2 seconds then shuts off. This is to pressurize the fuel system in anticipation of starting the engine. Have a buddy turn the key while you listen for the clicking relay.

The electrical connector to the fuel pump/sending unit, is accessible underneath the car near the fuel tank, usually behind it, the purple wire is the fuel pump power, i think, and will be energized for those 2 seconds after the key is turned on. The fuel filter is also underneath behind the fuel tank. If you replace the pump, deffinitely replace the filter too.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?the tank has to be dropped for that. i payed 450 bucks to have mine done.
