1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?

I received a car that had a broken cv axle. It had been sitting up for well over a year. I replaced the axle, bought a new battery, changed the oil, and put 2 gallons of gas in it (tank was dry, figured 2 gals. would be enough to start it). When I tried to start it I got nothing. So I poured a little gas into the throttle body to prime it and it started and ran for 8-10 sec. I then disconnected the fuel line and turned on the key to see if any gas was coming through, there was none. I checked the fuses and all were good. So I thought, it needs a new fuel pump, But after reading a lot of Dodge Man's answers (hoping to find one w/o posting a question), I found that it could also be the fuel filter or a relay. I'm not a mechanic but I did work at a salvage yard for 2 summers while in college and I can replace almost ANY part on a car if I know where it is. So, where is the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and the relay for the fuel pump? Oh, and how do I check fuel flow pressure when I'm done?1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?Sorry, yes you do...The domestic car makers are still behind the times when it comes to creating an access hole for the fuel pump. %26quot;having worked in a salvage yard, you should have caught on to that%26quot;. Also, don't be surprised by the price. You may may want to verify that you still have a good 12 volt signal and a reliable ground to the pump unit; furthermore, have you checked the fuel pressure and volume? How about injector pulse. You also have not indicated if it is a 4 or 6 cylinder. Some times the cost of diagnostics by professonals can save you a lot of money. I have fixed a many car after customers have installed many hundreds of dollars just to get it towed to me.

If you have a professional fuel gauge, here are some spec's.

Now, for saftey sake, and without me having to key in injector resistance's and wire diagrams...seek professional help. NEVER attempt to drop or check fuel pressure on a high pressure system..if you have that model, yourself. You may get blinded, or worse....burned.

My uncle did it. I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about. I just knew that it took them longer and cost me more money.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?Try to find a manual.

However I know that on the 1993 cavalier from the UK the fuel pump was actually inside the tank !

I think the fuel filter was up front near the throttle body...

This car was originally a german Open Ascona so may not be the same as other GM type cars.

See here under the Mark II entry.

Good luck.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?Yes, you have to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay is located under the hood, on the fire wall to the right. When you turn the key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position, the fuel pump relay clicks on for about 2 seconds then shuts off. This is to pressurize the fuel system in anticipation of starting the engine. Have a buddy turn the key while you listen for the clicking relay.

The electrical connector to the fuel pump/sending unit, is accessible underneath the car near the fuel tank, usually behind it, the purple wire is the fuel pump power, i think, and will be energized for those 2 seconds after the key is turned on. The fuel filter is also underneath behind the fuel tank. If you replace the pump, deffinitely replace the filter too.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?the tank has to be dropped for that. i payed 450 bucks to have mine done.

91 Honda Civic hb problems please help?

so one day i drive my car then let it sit over night i go to start it next morning it wouldnt start. its not getting fuel so i changed the fuel pump still wouldnt start up and to say that it is 20 degrees out at mid day so tells you how cold it is at night i tried to see if the main relay is working i cant really tell so my thing is how can you tell if a main relay is bad and what else could be the problem oh ya changed fuel filter too.91 Honda Civic hb problems please help?Hi, I don't believe Honda uses an inertia breaker like Fords. To check any relay you will usually need two people. A good relay will click, which you can both hear and feel. If you know where the main relay is (usually in the engine compartment fusible links/relays block.Under cover details), get someone to touch the relay while you turn the key. They should feel the contactors closing and hear a click. A good mechanic or electrician can look at the schematic and jump the power, one terminal is always hot.You use a test light to find it. First thing you should have done is spray starting fluid into the air filter to see if it started then stopped. That will tell you for sure if it's a fuel delivery problem. Hope you have friends who are handy. Good luck...Geo91 Honda Civic hb problems please help?Is there a reset button on a relay that shuts off the fuel pump in case of an accident? Fords have this in the trunk. If you hit a bump hard enough that could %26quot;trip%26quot; it. Or before you waste more money replacing good parts take it to the shop. Do you have a shop manual? They have diagnosyic procedures in them.91 Honda Civic hb problems please help?I'm going to suggest you get it in a garage for a few days to warm up. It sounds to me like your fuel line has frozen. Probably from water infiltration. It has been known to happen every now and then.

2001 Camry Fuel pump fix for the fuel gauge?

My 2001 Camry's Fuel Gauge got whacked after the car wreck.

The gauge would not come down at all.

I have been told I have to get a new fuel pump to get the gauge fixed.

How true is that?

If i do get a new fuel pump ( i know is under the rear passenger seat), how hard is it to change? Can an inexperienced guy like me change it?2001 Camry Fuel pump fix for the fuel gauge?I wouldn't because its messy, and if you don't really really know what your doing, you will get way in over your head quickly.

02 camaro v6 question?

I asked a couple question regarding my fuel issue and got a lot of helpful answers. I did however forget to include a detail that might help me before i tear my whole rear end down and drain my full fuel tank to change the pump.

I have a 2002 Camaro 3.8l 86k miles.

The day the car quit running it drove fine all day, that evening I took it to a friends house and when I left and tried to start it, it started but immediately would die, after a few cranks i got it to run only if I held the pedal to the floor it would sputter and idle about 4 or 500 rpms, after that it would die. The first time I opened my hood my belt was compeltely off the alternator pulley and water pump pulley. I reinstalled it correctly assuming this was the reason it would not run and attemped to start it again and the second I cranked it, it threw the belt off. After putting it on one more time, it finally stayed on and I proceeded to crank it and it would not start, but the belt stayed on even after about 5 minuted of cranking. Thats when I pulled the fuel filter off, i let whatever fuel was in the line and filter drain out. Then I left the filter off and turned my key position to on, and nothing came out of the fuel line from the tank. So i immediately assumed that it was the pump. So before I change the pump does anyone have any idea what would cause my belt to jump off? its the correct size and i checked all of pulleys the only that wouldnt spin freely was the crank of course. The belt is new. I am going to check my relays and fuses this afternoon but thought I would see if someone might have an idea. I have also already changed the fuel filter, originally my filter was so dirty that i could barely pass any air through it, a parts guy said that sometimes if you have a clogged filter for a long period of time it can cause a vacuum in the tank and eventually cause the pump to fail. However someone disproved that point earlier when they explained how the 02 Camaro fuel pump is made so that it is submerged in fuel even when there is little in the tank. Any help would be appreciated.02 camaro v6 question?Fuel pump?

If you've run out of gas more than once, it may be toast.

The fuel pump is on a two second timer when the ignition is turned on, but not started.

When the computer registers oil pressure with the engine running, it will keep the fuel pump operating.

The belt?

Make sure your A/C and defrost is turned off. Maybe remove the A/C fuse just to make sure.

You may have a problem with your A/C pump locking up and throwing the belt when the A/C pump clutch engages.

Don't yank the tank just yet.

Check your fuses under the dash, and under the hood in the power distribution box.

Check you engine oil level. (oil pressure)02 camaro v6 question?for your belt check pulley alignment as if are not straight the belt will jump or work its way off. As to fuel pump if the filter is plugged or severely restricted it will cause the pump to fail due to the excessive load against the pump. Just make sure relays and fuses are OK first.

Where to locate PCV valve on a Honda Accord 1986 twin barrel caurburetted engine?

How to check vaccum leaks as the car is idling rough and stalling. Carburettor was cleaned and Coil, distributor cap have been changed with used parts. Fuel Pump was changed (but not the filters as I could not get it).Where to locate PCV valve on a Honda Accord 1986 twin barrel caurburetted engine? With the car warmed up and idling, spray some carb cleaner in and around suspect areas of your intake manifold. An increase in engine rpm indicates vacuum sucking in the very combustible cleaner. This hose/gasket/seal needs to be an air tight vacuum.

The PCV is located in place on the top of your valve cover. It'll have a %26lt;1%26quot; dia rubber hose ran to it.Where to locate PCV valve on a Honda Accord 1986 twin barrel caurburetted engine? The pcv valve is located on the air cleaner housing. There is a hose running from it to the top of the valve cover. It is rectangular shaped. As for the vacuum leaks use a vacuum tester gauge (you can buy one at any part store or some store that sells car parts. it will cost you 20-50 dollars.) I honestly think it is a vacuum leak but if the car has a idle that bounces up and down like the car has a cam in it it could be a plugged EGR valve But it could be some of the following like a the Intake Air sensor the Air control Diaphragm a plugged Catalytic converter But I'm just a motorcycle mechanic so what do i know about cars.Where to locate PCV valve on a Honda Accord 1986 twin barrel caurburetted engine?Try the small things first like cleaning and replacing cheap parts like the PCV valve first. If the problem persists then pay the $30 or so to get it put on the machine to find the real problem. Just because you have them test it and tell you what is wrong doesn't mean you have to let them fix it. You pay enough for the diagnostics alone. Let them tell you what is wrong and then fix the problem yourself if you can.

How do i replace a fuel pump on a 1995 dodge neon?

My fuel pump went out and i got the part , i just wanted to know how to change it myself? How do i replace a fuel pump on a 1995 dodge neon?dropping the tank is the easiest way to replace that one,you got to get it high enough though to do this ,the reason i say drop the tank it gives you a chance to clean it out before you install the new pump in it,good luck. How do i replace a fuel pump on a 1995 dodge neon?i believe you have to remove the fuel tank to install a new pumpHow do i replace a fuel pump on a 1995 dodge neon?Drop the fuel tank then take the disasmble and so on

How do I clean the Fuel pump, filters and tank cleaning on a 95' plymouth neon?

I have a 95 plymouth neon that was sitting for about 6months. i recently bought it and changed the alternator. The car was running great i put fuel in it and gas line antifreeze. When i tried to start it this morning it would turn over but wouldnt run. A friend suggested that the gas that was in it could have been to old. and maybe clogged my fuel fliter or fuel pump... Is there anyway or any product to clean this tank, filters, and fuel pump. without replaceing them. How do I clean the Fuel pump, filters and tank cleaning on a 95' plymouth neon?you can add cleaners through the gas to clean it out but that may not get it started again, you may wind up having to replace the pump in it because once they been setting for a while sometimes they will go out and cause a lack of fuel to the engine,if it were me id check the pump pressure and also check the relay for it,before i pulled the tank off it,you cant really clean it out good without removing it,adding chemical cleaner to it only loosens up more junk and causes it to stop the strainer up more on it,there's also a fuse for the pump you need to check to make sure it hasn't blown on it,good luck with it.

  • How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?

What are the signs to know if a fuel pump has not failed but the filter just needs to be changed?

All the information I could find said that my problem could be the filter OR the pump but didn't state any differences in symptoms. How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?Replace the filter, they are relatively inexpensive when compared to a fuel pump. If the problem is resolved, great. If not then it is the pump. How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?you can't tell but the fuel filters cheap so its usually tried first and if that doesn't fix the problem the entire fuel pump gets replaced. it doesn't hurt to change the fuel filter anyway if it hasn't been done for a while. How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?If your fuel pump has quit entirely your car will neither start nor run. If it is just a clogged filter you will get intermittent miss firing because you will have not be delivering a steady supply of fuel. As has been suggested, replace your fuel filer first. If your fuel pump is going bad the symptoms will mirror those of a dirty filter but will be much worse. A dirty filter will rarely stop your engine from running. How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump? You can tell if your fuel pump is working if you put your key on the %26quot;on%26quot; position but don't crank. Listen for a whine in the back near the fuel tank. If you hear it then the fuel pump is getting power and is working.

To check the fuel filter remove the rubber fuel line coming out of the fuel filter and if fuel is coming out its working. Have some kind of bottle to catch the fuel also.

Thats how I have always check my filter/pump.How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?Like the others say..replace the filter, it's cheap and easy. If that does not cure the problem you can pressure test the fuel pump with a guage. You'll have to research for the correct output pressure for your model. The same type research will give you the flow rating for your pump. You can test that by routing a piece of fuel line from the pump output to a container, and see if the output for a certain length of time is correct. example...0.35 gallons/minute.How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?Dirty filter makes your moter stumble to get going and just wont run good becouse its starving for fuel. Change the filter, it's cheap and usually does the trick. the fuel pump works or it dont work. How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump? The symptoms for both are the same . Only real way to see is go ahead and change filter as it is the cheaper and easier of the two . If that doesn't solve problem , then fuel pump .How can I tell if my car needs a new fuel filter rather than an entire fuel pump?take the line off the fuel filter, turn the switch on and if gas pumps out through the line then it,s not the pump.

(run it first)

could easily be the fuel pump or a clogged vent system. If you remove your gas cap does it run better?

    Could be clogged injectors.

If you have an auto parts palce nearby, have them pull the codes for you off your diag port.I have a 94 sunfire that is sputtering and really boggy. i change the fuel filter and it has gotten worse.?When you ask a question, be sure to include the type of motor as it makes a difference in the answer and in this case it does. If you don't have a shraeder valve at the motor area, you will be running a four cylinder and that would make this a TBI which means the fuel pressure at idle will be 12-15 psi. If this is a V-6 motor, there is a schraeder valve and it runs at 35-45 psi. It could be the fuel pump and you are right in trying to diagnose it first as this is a costly and time consuming job. If you get the pressure and it is not right, you will have to change out the pump and in-tank strainers. If it is not the pump as in the pressures are good, I would have a throrough look at all secondary ignition outputs and the condition of the wires, coils, and spark plugs and make a determination from there. Good luck.

Does anyone know where the fuel pump is located on a 2003 lincoln aviator...and steps to how to change it?

it will help if you tell me everything that you know abt fuel pumps on lincolnsDoes anyone know where the fuel pump is located on a 2003 lincoln aviator...and steps to how to change it?It's located inside the tank. Does anyone know where the fuel pump is located on a 2003 lincoln aviator...and steps to how to change it?Well basically you'd have to drop the gas tank on that vehicle and the pump would be probably be located inside the tank. I'd just double check with parts suppliers or dealership to be sure where it's located but I believe it's probably in the tank.

It's not too hard of a job really especially if the bolts holding the straps on aren't too rusted out , otherwise what I'd do is simply cut the straps off and buy a set of universal straps from a parts outlet.

The top part of the tank has the wires and assembly on it that has to be removed and disconnected from the tank then reconnected and be sure to clean the connectors on the wires that go to the tank before reinstalling tank, plus what I do is when removing any hose clamps I replace them with new ones.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way those pumps run about 150 bucks plus taxes or more at a lot of places but if you call around you might find one cheaper , try the gas tank specialists or re-builders etc.

It could be a lot of things.....

If you have oil in your antifreeze and antifreeze in your oil, it is your head gasket.

    If not,

Start with the basics, Replace the sparkplugs, cap and rotor, replace your airfilter and pcv valve, if you haven't already done so replace your O2 sensor. Put a code reader on the engine and see if you get any error codes, this may help you track it down. You may have an electrical short that is happening when the engine gets warm enough.

This is a full motor home with a bathroom. This looks like a Dodge Ram B250 van, just a few inches longer.

I need special tools to change some things under the RV. I needed a special tool just to drop the tank to change the fuel pump. Absolutely no store carried this unusual tool. My mechanic had to hand make this tool from his ratchet set.

My question is, will it be complicated to change any of my oxygen sensors. How many do i have on this van.

Where is the one near the engine and where is the one furthest in the backWhere is my oxygen sensor located on my Dodge ????You have three. There is one on each exhaust manifold, and one right before the converter. You can use a 7/8 inch wrench or get a oxygen sensor socket from your local parts store. They are not hard to change. You may want to get it scanned to find out which one is bad. Most parts stores will scan it for you.Good luck,God Bless.Where is my oxygen sensor located on my Dodge ????I'm pretty sure that the van has one or two o2 sensors. One is either one or near or a little past the exhaust manifold, and the other should be right after the catylatic convertor.

How do I determine whats wrong?

I have an 88 pace arrow motorhome when I put a load on it it act like its starving for gas. WE CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP THAT DID WORK. ANY SUGGGESTION ON WHAT COULD BE WRONG. WHEN SITTING IDLE IT TAKES THE GAS AND GAS IS COMING OUT OF THE LINE TO THE CARDBERATORHow do I determine whats wrong?have you changed the fuel filter? sounds like this could be your problem or jets in carb could need cleaned especially if its something you let sit for long periods of timeHow do I determine whats wrong?try another load this load may have a short circuit in it so its drawing a lot of currentsHow do I determine whats wrong?Smell the gas does it smell stale or different than fresh gas. Gas turns into varnish. also the fuel in the carb could have went bad and plugged the jets run some sea foam through it with fresh gasoline and it may loosen up.

Next time you let it sit put fuel stabilizer in the tank and run it once in a while to move the fuel through the carb. How do I determine whats wrong?its normal if the fuel is coming from the line and to the carburetor, that what should happen if ur fuel system is good.

i still cant see the problem where u already said that u have changed the fuel pump and now its working. so the problem solved. How do I determine whats wrong? The problem is that these vehicles dont get driven much and the fuel in carb that dont drain back off, leaves a white residue in carb. will need to put a new carb kit in and clean out while doing it.

I can't find the fuel pump relay, I have looked through the entire fuse section in the cars manual with no mention of the fuel pump fuse, I have looked at service manuals with no luck.

And today I decided to try and unplug my fuel pump, I lifted the rear seat up, opened a little hatch and pulled the cord, when I started the car all that happend was the fuel gauge went to Empty, but the car kept running and did so until i turned it off 7 minutes later... ? ** btw u unplugged the fuel gauge..

no matter what u do ur going to have some fuel spill out when u disconnect the lines to fuel filter.......and yes i realize most manuals say to depressurize fuel system b4 u disconnect lines.....but in real life practice no one ever does cause if can cause other problems.....like sucking trash into injectors...etc..

EDIT: forgot to add just wear safety glasses and catch pan/bucket and rag...

Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?

i have a 2000 ford explorer and its been having problems. it was reving real bad and wouldn't accelerate when i put my foot on the gas and now when i turn it on it'll kinda stall for a few seconds then die. people are saying i might need a new feul pump, but to change the filter first cause it's cheaper.. but im having troube changing that. it wont come off... how do i relieve the pressure so i can take it off? (theres no bolts on the line to relieve pressure.. im new to this n im not quite sure wat to do)Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?Top of the motor on the fuel rail there is a valve similar to the valve on your tire this will release the fuel pressure .You can get a small plastic tool from the parts store to remove the filter from the lines .Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay then start the vehicle and wait till it dies. Fuel pressure is relieved,

Those lines can be tough to get off sometimes.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?you should relieve the pressure but it wouldnt prevent you from changing the filter. Your fuel lines have a retaing clip inside that you need a tool for or a couple of small screw drivers to release the clip.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter? There's a valve on the fuel rail you can relieve the pressure there,it looks like a tire valve stem. Even with pressure on the lines the filter can still be removed.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter? If you don't mind getting a little messy, you can remove and replace the filter without relieving the pressure. Even when the pressure is removed, some fuel can still escape.

Regardless, just have some rags handy and be careful not to damage any rubber fuel hoses while doing so.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?what i do is take the gas cap off to releave the pressure.Do i relieve the pressure to change the fuel filter?i never do and i have done hundreds of those filters. your problem does not sound like it is related to a bad filter. there is a release tool to pull the lines off of that filter. that is the problem

How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?

Trying to change my fuel pump, but need to drain the gas first. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug? You have to use the gas up, there is no further option. You can wait over a long period of time and let it dissolve on its own. Other than that there is no other option. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug? You can get a line to connect to the fuel rail, jump the relay with a wire and let it drail into a gas can. It will take a while to drain but you can empty as much as you need to safely lower the tank.

If you look on the side of the fuel rail you will see a screw on port for a fuel pressure gauge, just get a line that fits onto it, you can bring the cap with you to the store to make sure it will fit on the rail so you don't need to make multiple trips. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug? You don't need to drain the gas,use a floor jack to lift the gas tank up and down hardest part is getting the gas tank to balance on the floor jack.It works great if you can have one person on each side of the tank to help balance it when it's lowering down and raising up.

Jumping the fuel pump with straight power to drain the tank won't work if your fuel pump is not workingHow do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?Get a syphon pump for a boat gas tank at a marine store or walmart, it will be a simple line with a sqweeze bulb. sqweeze the bulb to syphon the fuel out, you can transfer it to anothers car tank and put the rest in a 5 gallon can for youself to get back to gas station when repair is done, dont try to take off tank full of gas cuz you could spill it everywere, plus much hevier and makes the job a pain, the syphon pump is real cheap. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug? This is one of those things I wish had a drain plug. I cannot tell you how many times my best friend and I had to take my gas tank off my Jeep Cherokee because of a bad fuel pump, broken hose and then to discover a relay had been the culprit.

You will either have to drive the vehicle to burn the gas or drop the tank.

For my BF and I luckily he had a lift and equipment to lower the tank down without breaking our arms and backs- empty or not.

One way that we did drain gas out was jumping the fuel relay and draining gas out from the fuel rail. I only recommend doing this IF you know what you are doing. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?Simply amazing, some of the other comments made....... I digress, get it up on a lift if possible, stands at least. The higher the better, by letting the rear axle hang down as far as possible, place a floor jack under the gas tank and loosen the straps. Now you can reach over the axle and remove the pump. There is no reason to drain the gas to change the pump. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?I used one of those hoses with a pump that you squeeze with your hand. You can get these at most auto parts stores. If the hose will not go all the way to the tank, you can remove the filler hose at the tank then put the hose in there. Then removed the tank. You can pour what is left out your filler neck. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?pick up a siphon pump from any local auto parts store. Pump the gas into a container. Drop the tank and change the pump.

EDIT: the guy above me has a much better solution if it works. If not then drain as stated. How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?Don't worry about draining the gas if your just changing the fuel pump.

Just take off the gas line and plug it or just let the gas drain into a coffee can.

You'll only loose a little gas if your good at it.How do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug?you can get a electric pump for a rail hose in one car one on a can hook batterry an thereHow do you drain the gas from a jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6, if there is no drain plug? You have to pull the tank.

really more like dirty system or a bad wire nissan know for bad wiringHow to trouble shoot fuel pump 1993 altima, fuel system extremely rough, will a pump go out completely?Sometimes they will go out like a lightbulb, other times they will try to hang on. The best way to test is get a fuel pressure test done.

The fuel filter can clogged very fast if you pumped bad gas into your tank. How to trouble shoot fuel pump 1993 altima, fuel system extremely rough, will a pump go out completely? What symptoms are you having?

I have seen a few Sentras of that era with bad intake gaskets causing rough idle and poor performance. How to trouble shoot fuel pump 1993 altima, fuel system extremely rough, will a pump go out completely?yes they can go without any warning but sometimes it,s not the pump but the fuel filter.some people just think it,s the pump when it don,t start but the fuel filter can act like the pump when it gets clogged. the filter can get pretty clogged that gas can,t go through them. also your problem could be the pump regulator on the fuel rail.

I HAVE A 95' BUICK LESABRE , 3800 MOTOR , HOW CAN YOU TEST THE FUEL PUMP ?

I have no pressure at the fuel rail, has gas to it , I changed the fuel pressure gage, and still the same, it starts and dies right away, any suggestions ?I HAVE A 95' BUICK LESABRE , 3800 MOTOR , HOW CAN YOU TEST THE FUEL PUMP ?remove fuel line somewhere an crank over motor if it squirts it worksI HAVE A 95' BUICK LESABRE , 3800 MOTOR , HOW CAN YOU TEST THE FUEL PUMP ?Could be a bad pump, relay, or possibly a fuel pressure regulator. It could also be a blown fuse or a fuel cutoff switch (incase you get in a car accident, it shuts off the pump). I would first check to make sure the pump is getting juice. If its not getting juice, then I would look for a fuel pump cutoff switch, fuse, and test your fuel pump's relay. Make sure your pump is getting juice before looking at the pump itself. If it's getting juice, but not giving out pressure, then it could (although I'm going to say unlikely) be a plugged fuel filter, kinked/pinched fuel line, or the fuel pressure regulator. If you turn the ignition to Run from Off (not trying to start it though), you should hear the pump spin up. If nothing at all, then I would replace the pump.

  • My car dies after it warms up, is it the crankposition sensor or something else?

I have a 1996 Nissan 200sx, 1.6. The car seems to run fine but when the RPM's drop that's when it randomly dies. It doesn't always do it but it does it. When it dies, sometimes it will crank up after a few but other times it will cranks but not start. I've changed fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, and rotor. The CPS should read 5 v but I get less than 1v. Should I replace it and see if it works or where could the voltage problem be and how do I fix it. Oh, when the car does start it still doesn't read 5 v.My car dies after it warms up, is it the crankposition sensor or something else?the cps gets a 5v power supply from the computer. You should have three wires coming off the senser, one power supply, one signal and one ground.

I would suspect your distributor is the problem though.

I might also save you a little bit of money to have it professionally diagnosed. My car dies after it warms up, is it the crankposition sensor or something else?sounds like a bad coil

Please help i have a 2003 lancer evolution 8 and i was driving on the freeway 12:30 at night cruising out of town and i get on top of the hill where a cop usually hides so i let off the throttle to check to see if he was there. he wasnt there so i go to accelerate and nothing i look down at my gauges and my dash lights are on and my car is off. No bang no pop no hesitation no sputter no nothing. it was like someone reached over and shut the key off on me????

Now it wont start turns over but no start. it will start with starting fluid and will run if you feather the throttle a little bit but if you put to much throttle it wants to die.

Things i have checked and done.

*Drained fuel and put in new

    *Changed spark plugs

    Checked

I am having a problem with my 96 240sx.. SR20DET Rebuilt.. FUEL PRESSURE PROBLEM?

I have Nismo 740cc Injectors.. Well everything to have the car be fully rebuilt. I changed to fuel pump to the Walbro 255 pump. I am not sure if I need a FPR now. I am getting way too much fuel. The injectors are drenched with gas whenever I take them out. The car will not idle at all with the 740cc injectors.. The spark plugs are black whenever I take them out. That is how much gas I am getting.. Please help me fix this fuel problem. I am getting a horrrrible amount of fuel. Wayy to much. Thanks so muchhh!I am having a problem with my 96 240sx.. SR20DET Rebuilt.. FUEL PRESSURE PROBLEM?You must match the injectors and the ECU, so the ECU will be able to deliver the correct amount of fuel, an AFPR will help, by lowering the pressure (and volume). this may be all you need to do. Make sure the MAF is working and no un metered air leaks exist between the MAF and the engine, anywhere there is a vacuum line or seal. Also ensure good ignition components (spark plugs, wires, coil, etc.) weak spark will manifest itself as poor combustion, but I think you are just dealing with too much fuel for the stock computer to deal with. Typically the ECU has about a +/- 25% range off base line to adapt and change, any more that and you run into issues.I am having a problem with my 96 240sx.. SR20DET Rebuilt.. FUEL PRESSURE PROBLEM?get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and turn the pressure down untill it runs correctly the problem is is that everyone thinks oh I can get bigger injectors and a higher pressure fuel pump and get 500 horse power, well you have to do ALOT more than that because you can only burn so much fuel without doing alot more modifications before you are just flooding the engine out

    Dodge dakota 1989 fuel Pressure?

89 Southwind RV has some engine and fuel problems and I need to know how to fix it?

I have 89 south wind rv it has a ford engine v8 7.5 engine. It does not run really well, when it is running a flame comes out from muffler pipe. I wonder if it gets too much fuel or something and also my battery gets really hot like it is boiling and my terminals are hot. I will like to know if the battery has something to do with it. My voltage is showing 16 so I think its a little bit too much charge. I changed my fuel pump and it was not the same one it was from a different car. My fuel pump is located outside the fuel tank. If there is anybody that can help me with this matter please let me know. Thank you.89 Southwind RV has some engine and fuel problems and I need to know how to fix it?I would change the plugs and wires then make sure the timing is correct. The voltage is kind of high though, a new alt may be needed.

Though this window you can change the fuel pump and screen without needing to remove the whole tank. How easy is it to pull of a gas tank to and replace the pump and screen on a 91 Plymouth acclaim? If memory serves me BRUNO KUSSLER got it wrong. The LH cars had that feature, not the acclaim. On the Acclaim you have to drop the tank to get to the pump. Drain the tank(sometimes easier said than done) Disconnect all the lines and hoses you see, then drop the tank low enough to get to the top lines and wire connection on top and unplug. Drop it down and unscrew the retainer ring and lift the pump assembly out.

Is it hard to change the timing on a fuel injector?

i have a 1992 ford f350 7.3 litter diesel and ive had the fuel pump, fuel lines, alternater, batteries, fuel fillter and glow plugs changed and it still wont start but only in the mornings. After its started it will run fine the rest of the day and my buddy told me the fuel injector timing was off and i was wondering if that could be it or not,and if so how hard it is to change itIs it hard to change the timing on a fuel injector?I'm not aware of any way to modify the injector timing - this comes from your computer. While there are some devices that can modify the way your computer responds, the injector pulse width is normally driven by values in a table based on the performance desired and known variables relating to your engine and the vehicle specs.

I didn't see pressure regulator mentioned in your lengthy list of repairs? Have you verified the fuel rail pressure? I would place injector timing at the bottom of my list of probable issues. (Unless there's a TSB for this.)Is it hard to change the timing on a fuel injector? You might want to see if the fuel lines are placed correctly. That can cause your mornings hard starts.

The timing should only be done by your local fuel shop.

2002 chevy silverado 4.8 fuel problem will not run?

I have a 2002 chevy silverado 1500 4.8L. I changed the fuel pump on it about a month ago. The check engine light came on and got a code for left and right bank lean. Then it started to lose power and misfire when you would step on throttle, then it died. I checked the codes it had left and right bank lean and crank sensor voltage low or high can't remeber witch one. I changed the sensor and the intake gaskets. It still will not start, I took off the fuel line at the fuel filter coming out the tank and turned on the ignition switch and nothing came out.I checked all the fuses and swaped the fuel pump relay and still did not work. How can I check the voltage at the fuel pump there is two plug ins on top,so I can make sure it went bad again.2002 chevy silverado 4.8 fuel problem will not run?First double check the ECM B fuse in the under hood fuse block, make sure it's OK.

the color of the wire that you need to check at the fuel pump is GREY, it's part of the 4 wire connector, make sure the plug doesn't have any burn marks (there is a recall on the fuel pump harness for this concern )check with the dealer to see if it's still open on your vehicle.

When testing for power at the Grey wire, key on, test light will illuminate for 2 seconds then shut-off.(when PCM receives RPM signal from crank sensor the GREY wire will be powered constantly).

From what you're describing, sounds like you have a faulty fuel pump.( low fuel pressure will cause loss of power and will set p0171 %26amp; p0174 lean bk 1 %26amp; bk 2.

Fuel pressure for your engine vin V should be 55-62 PSI

Go with a GM fuel pump (a bit more money, but alot less aggravation in the long run).

good luck.2002 chevy silverado 4.8 fuel problem will not run?OMG I just left my truck on the side of the road with the same problem. Got that changed out (which by the way sucks to replace) and it was working perfectly for about a week. Now all of the sudden it will not work at all. Any suggestions on how to fix this. • Fuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?

I have to put fuel into my Carbuerator to get my car just to start. Today my engine light came on and when I took it to get checked out, it was code 452, and was saying something about fuel pressue being low. So what I want to know is, is it the Fuel pump gone bad or the Fuel filter that is clogged or gone bad? I have a 2001 Chevy blazer and I just dont think that the fuel pump will be bad on it since its a newer car. I was told that its possible that my fuel filter is just clogged and needs changing. I already did a fuel injection cleaner but that didnt do anything. How much would it cost to change the fuel filter??? Please dont tell me to take it to the dealer, thanksFuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?Chevrolet fuel pumps are junk, frankly. I work at a Chevy dealership, and we do fuel pumps hand over fist on cars with sometimes as little as 30k. It's hard to say without putting a fuel pressure gauge on the car, but the fuel pump probably is bad. If the fuel pump is bad, you should have the fuel filter replaced at the same time, because it probably hasn't ever been done. When the fuel filter clogs up, it makes the fuel pump work harder, which is just too much to ask for those crappy little pumps, so have the fuel filter changed every 15k or so, to maximize fuel pump life. Labor times for fuel pump replacement are 2.1 hours for a 2 door blazer, 3.0 hours for a 4 door, and if the tank has a shield on it, thats another 0.5 hours. The fuel pump is somewhere in the range of 500 to 550 dollars. Most shops will charge 1.0 hour to diagnose the problem, and the fuel filter pays 0.7 hours to replace, some shops charge less so they can sell more of them. I don't know what labor rates are in your area, dealerships are around 100 dollars an hour around here, independent shops are around 75. I personally would advise against trying to get a cheaper aftermarket fuel pump, as bad as the factory pumps are, the aftermarket ones are even worse, and a total waste of money. Go with factory parts-make an issue of it with your mechanic if you need to.Fuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?A fuel filter usually costs about $10 from walmart and it is extremely easy to replace. My guess about 15 minutes by any mechanic.

Simple troubleshooting, spend the few dollars and eliminate that possibility.

Fuel pump could be bad, or the fuel pressure regulator. It is vacuum operated, so there might be a possibility that you lost a vacuum hose on or near the regulator. These are all easy things to check and any mechanic would be able to diagnose it. You don't have to go to the dealer.

    Good luck.

Edit: Upon further thought, you might have a fuel injector that is stuck open and releasing the fuel pressure after it has set for a little while. Again, this isn't hard to diagnose, a decent mechanic can find this as well.Fuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?Fuel pressure valveFuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?You have not given enough information to tell you exactly what is wrong, but it is a safe guess that the fuel filter may be at fault. You would need fuel pressure readings to know if it is a fuel pump, it could even be the injector or the computer or the ignition module for that matter.Fuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?A fuel filter for your vehicle is only a few dollars. When trying to diagnose a problem without alot of special test equipment, or experience... Always replace the least expensive part (filter) first! That way, even if it doesn't fix the problem, you haven't wasted alot of money. If your engine continues to run on it's own after you pour gas in your carb./thottle body, you can assume the pump is working but fuel flow is restricted.Fuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?I own Chevy檚 and have always, with these computers you are best advised to stay with the dealer part. The fuel filter is located likely as on mine under the vehicle just ahead of the tank mounted on the frame in the wide open. Any one can replace it with an IQ above 40. If you'll go by a dealer take your insurance card with you they can pull up your exact vehicle by the VIN number located on your insurance card. Change the filter and see where you're at. Because one way or the other the filter should be changed and it's very likely the filter because one trip through a cheap gas station with filth in their storage tank can wipe out the filter and besides by time you paid to have it checked you could have just changed it yourself. From there if you still have fuel problems it is the pump which is mounted in the tank and requires the tank to be pulled and drained to service it. If the vehicle is still run able then drive it until the warning light comes on that you are near empty then have the pump replaced. I would locate a good dependable mechanic to do the work and supply the pump yourself purchased as you did the filter. It isn't rocket science to install but one has to be strong enough to handle the tanks weight with what ever amount of fuels in it. If you have some gear head male friends they can do it in a driveway and save you a heap of money. Shops going to charge for disposal of the old fuel and for new fuel to run on as well. Also don't start the car by pouring gas in the throttle body (carb as you call it) because there is a high risk of fire, use starting fluid that comes in a spray can and is available at Wal-Mart or anywhere else that carries the basics. I have had to replace the fuel pump two times on a 1989 pickup with 225,000 miles on it. I also have a 94 Chevy that hasn檛 ever been changed so I don檛 agree that they go out left and right as stated in another answer.Fuel Pump Vs Fuel Filter? (SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY)?First off I am scared of where you are placing fuel at!!! You say you have to put it in the carb, yet later you say you have injectors. If your running fuel intot he throttle body, then you are opening yourself up for a problem. All I can say is change the filter first, since it is easier and cheaper. If you still carry the fault then you know it might be the pump. You will have to take it to the dealer to get it changed cause it is most likely inside the gas tank, not fun to change.

How do i remove the back seat of my Lexus ES300?

I have a 2000 Lexus ES300 i need to remove the backseat but not sure how to do that....Need to change the Fuel PumpHow do i remove the back seat of my Lexus ES300?Most rear seats in cars can be removed by examining the underside bottom, front lip area of the seat cushion at the front outer edges of the seat. There's usually a hook on either side of it's inner metal framing that engages a metal plate welded to the floor to keep it in place. You may have to feel around under the seat to find it. By pushing downwards and backwards on the seat cushion in those areas ....one side at a time..., you can usually disengage the hook from that plate and then lift the seat cushion up and out. Some cars have it bolted in place instead of a hook. The rear seat back cushion is usually bolted to the metal structure behind it...look for a bolt in either lower corner of the seat back...unscrew the bolts and then lift the seat back cushion forward at the bottom and push up to disengage it at the top.

Reverse the order to reinstall. How do i remove the back seat of my Lexus ES300?pull up on the seat bottom to try to see between it and the carpet.

should be a white tab looking block on each side of the front of the lower seat bottom. you push on the button on it with a screwdriver and the seat should pull up (might have to pull while you push).

then the seat bottom should come up.

On the power steering issue sounds like the fluid is reaching its boiling point after it warms up which it could be contaminated with water or something since it hasent been running. I would recommend draining the fluid and refilling it and also add some lucas power steering fluid and see what happens.JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?Hi

For your power steering, any adjustment would be on the steering box

And I think your rpm`s should be up to about 850. For the knock, put in two qt/liter of transition fluid in the oil. (Take out about 2 qt) It is

mostly detergent and may clean the lifters. Its worth a try ! And leave

it in for a few days.

Running out of gas is the most common cause...in-tank fuel pumps need fuel to help cool them during operation. You could be getting defective pumps, the strainer may be allowing debris to get sucked up or may have a wiring issue causing too much voltage or poor ground also. How can you tell a fuel pump is going bad on a 97 Astro van? Best way to keep this from happening is to never let the fuel get below 1/4 tank. The fuel is the only thing that cools the pump so if you run it on empty all the time-the pump overheats and wears out quicker.

And shaped different so if the total was 5 gallons it would be enough to just get started. The fuel pump would run when energized by ignition switch ON. Then the pump would continue until the fuel hose is full, which then increases pressure.

The pump runs until the pressure is high enough for the fuel pressure switch and regulator.

You can turn the ignition ON until the pump stops. Then OFF. Then ON once more and the fuel pump won't run as long because the air is out, and the pressure is high now.

Honda Accord 1986 EX 2 DR running rough and stalling. Car stalls when accelerating or starting from a stop.?

I started with a carburettor cleaner in fuel to try cleaning the carburettor. Did not work so removed the carburettor and cleaned it with brush etc as advised. Refitted it but same problems. The problem did not get worse so I think I did it OK. Then a mechanic told me to change the fuel pump. This is a carburetted car so I don't think a pump has such an active role. But I changed the pump . I have tested fuel flow by running the engine and collecting the oil in a bottle. The quantity was enough to keep it running and the engine was running on float bowl fuel at that time.

Now I think it may be an electrical problem. What should I try there? The car can be managed to be ridden for 5-6km if I keep using choke. The engine type is ET1. If inertia is applied in force, it triggers the switch to turn off fuel. Once the ignition is off, bleead the pressure out by depressing the tire like valve on the fuel rail. Change the filter and then turning the key on will repressurize it.

Good LuckI want to change the fuel filter on a 93 merc sable 3.0 help? After you shut off the car, lift the hood. On the fuel rail assembly where the injectors come from and you should find a valve that looks like a valve stem you see in a tire. Press the steel relief pin in the middle of it in and gasoline will squirt out and relieve the pressure.

It's called a pressure relief valve. The best way to relieve it is to place an old rag over while you push the pin in.

You're going to have some gasoline run out of the fuel line when you take the old filter off anyway, so use a catch pan.

You don't need to fool with that safety shutoff switch. It's a safety device and if you trigger it manually it might fail in the event of an accident.

Finally, if you're going to work on your own cars, invest in the repair manual sold for that year make and model of car. The name of the manual is Hayne's or Chilton's. Hayne's manuals are better. They tell you step by step how to properly make repairs just like this one, and much more.

JWHow do you take off the White quick connect fittings on the automobile fuel pump lines?Ok what you need is the tools to do it with.

Thy are the quick disconnect fuel line tools, and you can get them from Auto-Zone.

Thy come in a nice houlder and there is 6 or 8. Thy come in different sizes for the different size fuel lines.

Insert the tool and pull gently on the line and it will come apart

What is inside is a small clip that grabs the line and when you insert the tool it moves this clip aside and the line comes apart.

To reconnect just push the 2 fittings together untill thy click. Then pull to be shure it is connected.

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu LS with 134,300 miles on it.

I recently had a %26quot;tune-up%26quot; which involved changing out the plugs and wires. Does this increase the life of the car? What else can I do to increase the life of my car (besides belt changes, fluid flushes, oil changes, fuel filter and oil filter changes, and other routine maintenance)? I want this car to last until 200,000 or even beyond. The only problems I've had with it have been relatively minor (fuel pump needed changed and turn signals needed to be replaced which was on a recall and I had both done for free; something with the radiator pump or something the other needed to be replaced, which was just a $30 job; and I think that's all that's really gone wrong.)How do I increase the life of my car?In order to make your car last a long time, you need to make sure you get regular oil changes (including the oil filter). Another thing that helps is keeping it clean. I suggest washing your car at least once every two or three weeks. About every 3 washes, make sure you wax it. Paste wax is the easiest to work with in this application. Make sure you go by the book and have regular mantinence at the scheduled intervals. I would also make sure te tires have the proper amount of pressure in them to keep those last as long as they can. Depending on where you live during the colder winter months, make sure you let your car warm up for at least 5 minutes!! It is very hard on an ice cold engine to run in winter conditions! Other than that, make sure you know how your car runs. Also %26quot;listen%26quot; to your car. That way if something goes wrong, you can hear or feel it on the wheel. How do I increase the life of my car?The car will last as long as you keep doing the maintenance. At somepoint the cost of the maintenance isn't justified. Why put $1500 in repairs towards a car that isn't worth $1500?

You should know what the value of the car is, then decide if fixing it is a good use of your money.

Most cars get to a point where the high $ repairs start coming in constantly, at that point your more or less making a car payment anyway...

I have 1999 Nissan Maxima with 155K miles on it. It's getting to that point now. Just invested $2K in service + brakes, now it needs fuel injectors for another $1K. The trade-in value is just over $3K, when do I say uncle? How do I increase the life of my car?depending on the make of the auto some cars will surpass 200,000 miles quite easily. Not knowing the make or model of your car I would say your on the right track all ready with your regular ,routine maintenance program.Changing motor oil is one of the most important and vital things you can do. However you can make a huge difference in the vehicles life expediency,by the way you drive it.I mean if you let it warm up in the morning or at the beginning of your commute, this will make your engine happy. Also after your commute let your engine idle for a few minutes, before shutting it off. This will let the hot engine cool and reduce wear and tear on moving parts and sealing components Heavy or hard acceleration is kind of rough on an engine as well as the transmission. This too should be avoided,as well as hard deceleration or coming to a sudden stop from a high speed. Have you ever heard the phrase yep this vehicle is a real cream puff, all highway miles on her, perhaps during a sale of a vehicle? There is a big difference in highway miles vs stop and go city traffic miles on a vehicle. I would stay away from any oil additives like prolong engine treatment or slick 50 to name a couple. These oil additives are not at all necessary if you take care and use common sense, which you seem to already have.I think your on the right track alright and should be fine.Good Luck Drive Safe
