The grease being thick will help hold it in place till you insert the pump and start bolts. Look at the very front of block, right there at the corner where fuel pump is.



You will see a bolt in a hole, then a hole with out a bolt in it right under the bolt.



Take that bolt out. (its a short one) and get you a longer 3/8%26quot; course threaded bolt, push rod up and screw that longer bolt into that hole.



That hole is right in line with the pump rod and is drilled straight through. In fact thats why GM drilled that hole fully through.



The bolt will press against rod and hold it in place for you.



Then once pump is one, just take that longer bolt out and put your short one back in.



Remember being its drilled through, you have to keep a bolt in it at all times or oil will squirt out, so don't loose your short bolt, or forget it
