you need to put at least three gallons in it if you don't you may burn the new pump out on it,if it dry pumps it doesn't take long for it to do damage to it,good luck.I just change the fuel pump in a dodge caravan, how many fuel gallons does it need the pump to start?I would assume that it would be similar to when I ran my Caravan out of gas. It took about two gallons in the tank before it would start again. This is the conclusion after having run it dry a couple of times (o.k., several times). I know that if I put just a gallon in it would crank until I melted the starter, but on other occasions when I put 2 gallons in and cranked, it would fire.
