the fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel itself so running the tank low not only lets the pump suck up all of the crud at the bottom of the tank but starves the pump of its lubrication. the only way to change the pump is to drop the tank and this could be tricky if it is full of fuel i think gas weighs about 13 pounds a gallon, do the math hope this helpsFuel pump problems?a repair man should see itFuel pump problems?the fuel pump itself is fairly easy but you need to find out why it is going out so fast. my chevy 1500 (1992) has around 256000 miles on its first fuel pump. i think you may have something else wrong and the pump dieing is a symptom of that.Fuel pump problems?are you sure its the pump and not the relay that gives it power?Fuel pump problems?You may want to check the wiring into the pump itself. You may have difficulty changing it yourself, as you have to pull out the gas tank, which is a royal pain to do in your driveway.Fuel pump problems?If you have 3 or 4 friends around,you can unbolt the bed and lift it off the frame. The fuel pump is readily accessible at that point. The bed is pretty heavy,so be careful! If you do replace the pump yourself,make sure that the wire connector at the tank hasn't overheated due to a poor connection. This will shorten the life of the new pump also. Make sure that you don't have a stopped up fuel filter. Whether you drop the tank or pull the bed off,it's not an easy job.
